Whites Top Reds 15-7 in Series Opener

Lincoln ? Andy Gerch went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs to pace the White squad to a 15-7 victory in the opening game of the Red/White Series at Hawks Field Wednesday afternoon.

 

Gerch put the Whites up 1-0 in the first inning with a solo home run to left centerfield, then contributed a single in a string of six hits in the second inning, when the Whites combined for six runs. Jake Mort added a single of his own in the second to bring in Brett Sowers and Mitch Abeita. In one swoop with Gerch’s late-inning single, DJ Belfonte scored his first of two runs, Mort advanced and scored on a throwing error, and Mark Hightower followed in for a third run.

 

The Red squad responded with two runs in the third, as Jake Opitz scored on a pass ball after taking off from second on a 3-2 pitch that resulted in a walk for Jeff Lanning. Andrew Brown, who reached base with a walk, also scored during the inning. The Reds added runs from Lanning and John Lee in the fifth.

 

Not taking the rally lightly, the Whites came back with two runs on three hits in the sixth inning, as Belfonte, who went 2-for-6 with three RBIs on the day, brought Hightower home. Craig Corriston then singled up the middle to score Mort from third and gave the White team an 8-4 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.

 

Bats for both teams remained quiet through the seventh inning, but the White squad came through again for five runs on five hits in the top of the eighth. Hightower led off with a single to left, followed by a bunt single by Mort. Belfonte then doubled to rightfield, scoring both men on base, and was later brought around by a Corriston single. After a throwing error, Corriston notched his first run of the day, and Sowers pushed Gerch home with a single to the left side to up the score to 14-4.

 

The Red squad made a final rally attempt in the bottom of the eighth, as Andy Cotton flared a single to right, and Opitz and Brown drew a walk apiece to load the bases. Lanning sent a double down the leftfield line to score Opitz and Cotton, and Brown was brought in on a single to right by Lee to achieve the final 15-7.

 

Tim Scott earned the victory for the Whites, throwing one complete inning and surrendering just one hit in his first relief stint. Starter Matt Foust took the loss for the Red squad, going four innings with two strikeouts, while White squad starter Drew Bowman held the Reds scoreless over the first 2 2/3 innings and posted three strikeouts, but got a no decision.

 

The Red/White Series continues Thursday with the second of three scrimmages set for this week. Tim Radmacher will take the mound for the White squad, and Dan Jennings is slated to start for the Reds. The contest begins at 3 p.m. at Hawks Field.
