Ruiz Seventh at NCAA Championships

Columbus, Ohio - Senior Stephanie Ruiz fired an even-par-72 to sit in a tie for seventh place to lead the Nebraska women's golf team at the NCAA Championships Tuesday.

Ruiz, a native of Edmond, Okla., was the top Husker performer in the first round of the four-day, 72-hole NCAA Championships on the 6,203-yard Scarlet Course. Ruiz helped the Huskers finish the first day in a tie for 21st place in the 24-team field hosted by Ohio State University.

Ruiz is four strokes behind individual leader Eileen Vargas of Pepperdine, who shot the best round of the day with a four-under-par 68. Florida's Tiffany Chudy sits in second with a three-under-par 69.

As a team, the Huskers finished with a 23-over-par 311 to match Oklahoma State in 21st place. The Huskers finished the first 18 holes ahead of Kent State (312) and UNLV (313).

Nebraska is just six strokes out of 15th place and are well within striking distance of the best NCAA Championships finish in school history. Nebraska's previous best finish in two trips to the NCAA Championships came with a 19th-place showing at the 2000 tournament.

Sophomore Elli Brown added a solid opening-round effort in her first NCAA Championships appearance by shooting a four-over-par 76 to end the day in a tie for 46th. Senior Sara Sackett added an 81 to close the day in 115th, while junior Chrissie McArdle added an 82 to head into the second round in a tie for 116th. Sophomore Allison Stewart closed her first day at the NCAA Championships with an 87.

NCAA Central Region champion USC closed the first day of the tournament in first place with a three-over-par 291. Fellow Pac-10 Conference school Arizona State sits just one stroke back of the Women of Troy with a four-over par 292. Florida sits just two strokes out of the lead at 293, while Arizona managed a 296 to give the Pac-10 three of the top four teams at the end of day one.

Texas A&M had the best showing of the three Big 12 Conference schools in the field, as the Aggies managed a 302 to close the day in 13th place.

Nebraska begins the second round on Wednesday with a 1:10 p.m. tee time.
