Multi-Event Huskers Compete at Missouri

Seven members of the Nebraska men’s and women’s track and field teams began their weekends with multi-event competitions Thursday at the Audrey Walton Combined Events Carnival in Columbia, Mo.

Day one action in the women’s heptathlon concluded with Husker senior Sara Jane Baker in fifth place (3,087) among a very talented field of athletes featuring 2005 USATF bronze medalist Fiona Asigbee, who paces the field with a first-day total of 3,448 points. Baker set one personal best in four events Thursday with a mark of 36-10 ? in the shot put. Also competing for the NU women, sophomore Kim Shubert currently sits in 10th place with 2,958 points. Shubert also set a lifetime best in the shot put (34-4 ?).

Leading Nebraska’s five-man delegation in the men’s decathlon was redshirt freshman Skyler Reising, who set personal bests in the 100-meter dash (11.31w), long jump (21-8w) and 400-meter dash (51.24) on his way to a first-day, seventh-place total of 3,652 points. Junior Lee Martin recorded an 11th-place total of 3,507 points, while sophomore Ben Schutter ranks 12th (3,490). Redshirt freshman Patrick Burke is in 14th place with 3,459 points, while Corlan Vonderschmidt sits in 19th (2,456). Darius Draudvila (unattached) leads the field with a score of 4,229.

The Audrey Walton Combined Events wrap up Friday on the University of Missouri campus beginning at 11:30 a.m. Several more Huskers will be in action Saturday at the Nebraska Invitational, which will be hosted at Ed Weir Stadium. Field events begin the day at 11 a.m., while running events follow suit at Noon. Admission is free, as fans attending the Red-White Spring Football game are encouraged to stop by.
