Huskers Fall in Conference Opener

Lincoln, Neb.?The No. 36 Nebraska women’s tennis team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday to No. 3 Texas, 6-1, at the WoodsTennisCenter.  NU falls to 4-1 on the season.

“I’m proud of how hard we played today,” coach Scott Jacobson said.  “We kept battling, and we showed how competitive we are.”

The Huskers’ bright spot came at the No. 1 singles spot with No. 36 freshman Kim Hartmann as she faced Texas’s junior Petra Dizdar.  Hartmann jumped out early and gained a commanding lead, taking the first set, 6-2.  In the second set, she found herself down, 5-4, before she rallied to take the second set into a tight tiebreaker.  Hartmann preserved her undefeated spring singles record, defeating Dizdar, 7-6 (7-5), in the second set.

“Hartmann proved she is one of the most gifted players in the country today,” Jacobson said.

Senior Pamela Castillejos, who played at the No. 5 slot, also gave a great effort and after falling in the first set, 6-2, battled back to take the second set, 6-2.  After exchanging long points, Castillejos fell, 6-4, in the third set.

The Huskers take to the courts again to finish a six-match homestand on Monday at the WoodsTennisCenter, as they take on No. 57 Arkansas at Noon.
