Milena Schulz-Gartner Season 2003-04

2005-06: Senior

Milena Schulz-Gartner finished her Husker career with a strong 2005-06 season. Finding success on both the singles and doubles court, Schulz-Gartner ended the spring season with 33 combined victories, tied with Imke Reimers and Kim Hartmann for most on the team. 

 

After going 0-2 in the fall on the singles court, Schulz-Gartner found her groove in the spring and played her way to a 16-9 record. She played well at the No. 4 spot, going 5-5 on the season, but was outstanding in the No. 3 slot, where she posted a mark of 11-4. Schulz-Gartner held her own against conference competition, as well, notching a 6-5 record in Big 12 play.

 

On the doubles court, Schulz-Gartner paired up with Big 12 Freshman of the Year Kim Hartmann for all 23 matches. The duo dominated the competiton, cruising through the spring to a 17-6 record. Although they lost both matches they played at the No. 1 spot, the tandem of Schulz-Gartner and Hartmann was almost unbeatable in the No. 2 position, picking up a tremendous 17-4 record, including an impressive 8-3 record against the Big 12.

 

Schulz-Gartner also excelled in the classroom, earning first-team academic All-Big 12 honors for the first time in her career.

 

2004-05: Junior

Schulz-Gartner built off of a solid sophomore season and carried the momentum into her junior campaign. The native of  Germany played anywhere from the No. 2 to 4 slots but saw most of her action at the No. 3 position, where she went 7-4 on the season. Three of her four losses were three-set thrillers.

Schulz-Gartner combined her hard-hitting style of play and experience to give the Huskers a valuable middle lineup player.  She did not appear in the team's last six matches of the regular season. While, NU won five of those six matches, her absence was felt, as four of the victories were decided by one point.

In doubles, the two-time letterwinner teamed up primarily with Pamela Castillejos at the No. 3 slot where they produced an 8-3 record. Schulz-Gartner finished the season with a 13-4 doubles record.

2003-04: Sophomore
Schulz-Gartner posted a 4-3 fall singles record in her first collegiate action. After falling to No. 84 Yanick Dullens of Denver in the first round of the ITA Central Region Championships, Schulz-Gartner won three straight matches to advance to the consolation semifinals. In doubles action, Schulz-Gartner teamed with NU senior Anna Oehme and went 2-0 at the Lloyd Stokstad Invitational.

Schulz-Gartner began the season as the No. 1 singles player for the Huskers, while Gitte Ostermann recuperated from an injury. At the top slot, Schulz-Gartner went 3-3. At the No. 2 slot, she found greater success with a 13-6 record. She also went 5-6 in conference action. During the spring season, Schulz-Gartner put together two four-match winning streaks.

On the doubles court, she was just as effective. Teaming with senior Anna Oehme at the No. 3 doubles slot, the duo went 18-4, including a conference record of 9-2. Their doubles season win total tied the tandems of Jennifer Thoste and Sandra Noetzel in 1996-97 and Lisa Hart and Annie Yang to rank fifth in school history.

Schulz-Gartner received the first academic honor of her career when she was named to the 2004 Big 12 Commissioner's Spring Honor Roll.

Before Nebraska
Schulz-Gartner attended Hans-Geiger Gymnasium High School where she graduated in 2002. Gitte Ostermann, a first-team All-Big 12 performer for the Huskers, attended the same school. After Gymnasium, Schulz-Gartner attended Christian-Albrechts University where she studied law for a year before transferring to Nebraska.

Personal
Born Jan. 31, 1983, in Kiel, Germany, Milena Schulz-Gartner is the daughter of Christina and Axel. Schulz-Gartner has one older brother, Christer, 23. Milena is an international business major.
