Tranel Leads Huskers at Roy Griak Invitational

St. Paul, Minn. - Senior tri-captain Kayte Tranel led all Nebraska runners with a 27th-place finish in the women's 6K race as the Husker men's and women's cross country teams competed among a talented racing field at the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday.

Tranel, who earned Big 12 Runner-of-the-Week honors two weeks ago, ran a season-best 6K time of 21:53 to lead the Husker women to a 14th-place team finish, defeating preseason nationally-ranked North Carolina (No. 26) and Southern Methodist (No. 31) in the process. The NU men placed 26th in the team standings as only five of the six runners finished the race after sophomore Peter van der Westhuizen suffered an injury on the course.

Tranel was one of four Husker women to place in the top 100, along with senior tri-captain Kim Pancoast (41st, 22:09), and freshmen Ari Goldstein (60th, 22:23) and Natalja Zarcenko (100th, 22:57).

"Kayte (Tranel) had an outstanding race," Head Coach Jay Dirksen said. "Overall, we ran pretty well through our top five. It was a real credible showing, and I was pretty pleased. We faced some good teams."

Zarcenko set a season-best time, as well as sophomore Betsy Miller, who clocked a career-best 6K time to finish fifth on the team (143rd overall) in 23:23. Miller's mark was more than two-and-a-half minutes faster than her previous personal best.

After fighting through recent injuries, junior co-captain Aaron Nasers led the Husker men for the first time this season with a 162nd-place showing in a season-best time of 26:43.

Freshman Brian Parr also set a season-best time in 26:59 on his way to becoming the runner-up Husker male finisher for the second time this year. Another Fremont native, junior co-captain Bryce Dickmeyer, finished two seconds behind Parr in 177th (27:01).

Freshmen Kyle Custer (196th, 27:30) and Chris Clymer (205th, 27:45) rounded out the NU men's finishers. Clymer's performance was a career best.

"We ran a little better this week," Dirksen said. "We're still having some trouble with some injuries, but we have improved since we were here last year. It may not show on the results, but we are getting better."
