Lincoln ? The second game of the Nebraska softball team’s Thursday doubleheader with Northern Colorado ended much the same way as the first, with Nebraska erasing a 2-1 lead with a two-run inning to claim a 3-2 victory.
NU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Junior Trisha Tannahill hit the second triple by a Husker this season with one out and came home one batter later on an RBI single from sophomore Jamie Waldecker.
Just as they did in game one of the doubleheader, the Bears erased the 1-0 lead and jumped on top 2-1. Casey Hogue reached on an error with one out and Whitney Platten took a 3-0 pitch from Borg over the wall in left-center field to put UNC on top.
The Huskers responded in the bottom of the fifth inning. Freshman Cassie Kleinsmith led off with a double to right-center and senior Anne Steffan reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners. Junior Jessica Yoachim then singled to left field to score Kleinsmith with the tying run. Steffan moved up to third and Yoachim advanced to second following a sacrifice by junior Elizabeth Rock.
NU then took a 3-2 lead when senior Sheena Lawrick perfectly executed a squeeze bunt to score Steffan.
Northern Colorado threatened in the sixth inning, but solid defense from the Huskers preserved the one-run lead. With runners on first and second and no outs, Steffan recorded an out at second unassisted and nearly turned the double play. With runners on the corners, shortstop Devin Porter fielded a ground ball and made a good throw home, where Waldecker tagged out Kelsey Dumler for the second out. Kati Miller then popped out to end the inning.
Sophomore right-hander Jaime Borg (3-0) tossed a career high six innings in picking up the win. She allowed only one earned run on three hits and struck out four as Nebraska improved to 29-16 with the win. Fellow sophomore right-hander Ashley DeBuhr picked up her first career save, striking out all three batters she faced in the seventh inning.
Stephani Miller (3-8) took the loss for UNC, which fell to 10-24.
Offensively for Nebraska, Tannahill finished 2-for-3, while Waldecker, Lawrick and Yoachim each added an RBI.
Nebraska returns to action this weekend when it hosts OklahomaState for a two-game series. First pitch for Saturday is set for 2 p.m.
