Shadle Shines at Tyson Invitational

The Nebraska men’s and women’s track and field teams opened their weekend slate of competition by sending athletes to a trio of collegiate meets. NU fielded partial squads at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, and Prairie Wolf Invitational in Lincoln.

Senior Anne Shadle began the Huskers’ effort in Arkansas by recording a blazing time of 4:40.08 in the women’s mile run, the third-fastest indoor mark in school history. Shadle broke her previous best of 4:45.23 set at last week’s Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational, lowering her already NCAA provisional-qualifying mark. The time currently ranks as the third-fastest among all NCAA Division I athletes.

Sophomore Priscilla Lopes was NU’s lone other first-day competitor at the Tyson Invite, finishing fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.17. Danielle Caruthers, competing for Nike, won the event in 7.98.

The largest contingent of Husker athletes traveled to the Iowa State Classic in Ames.

Senior Authea Chambers reached her first NCAA provisional-qualifying standard of the 2005 season when she won the women’s triple jump with a career-best leap of 20-3 ?. In the men’s long jump, sophomore Arturs Abolins placed second with a season-long mark of 25-2. The lone other high NU finisher during the meet’s first day was sophomore Nate Probasco, who tied for fourth in the men’s 200-meter run.

While most Huskers headed out of town for the weekend, several athletes remained in Lincoln to compete at the Prairie Wolf Invitational, hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Track.

Junior Sara Jane Baker set a career-best time of 56.34 in winning the women’s 400-meter dash, breaking her previous mark of 57.76. Baker also finished third in the women’s long jump (18-3 ?). Junior Jessie Graff gave the NU women another win when she cleared 12-6 ? to claim the women’s pole vault title.

Leading the Husker men was junior Tom Donlin, who won the weight throw with a spin of 60-11 ?. Senior Danny Tylka added another outstanding performance in the men’s pole vault, finishing second with a career-best mark of 16-2.

Nebraska continues its weekend of competition on Saturday with the conclusion of the Tyson Invitational and Iowa State Classic.
