Ann Arbor, Mich. ? The Nebraska softball team continued its fall season by posting a 4-1 record at the Michigan Tournament, which concluded on Sunday with a 2-1 Husker victory over Michigan, which has qualified for three of the last four Women’s College World Series.
Nebraska opened the tournament by holding off Eastern Michigan 4-3 on Saturday. Sophomore right-hander Jaime Borg threw five shutout innings before EMU tied the game 3-3 in the sixth inning. The Huskers added a run in the seventh and freshman right-hander Jordan Keen, who relieved Borg in the sixth inning, picked up the victory.
NU’s second game on Saturday was a 4-1 setback to Michigan. Keen pitched a complete game, but took the loss in her second decision of the day.
Central Michigan was Nebraska’s final opponent on Saturday. A three-run, fourth-inning home run by junior Trisha Tannahill proved to be the game winner in the Huskers’ 3-0 win. Sophomore right-hander Ashley DeBuhr tossed a complete-game shutout to pick up the victory.
On Sunday, NU faced Eastern Michigan again and earned its second straight one-run victory over EMU, 5-4. Senior Kira Boerkircher put Nebraska up 1-0 with a solo home run in the second inning and finished the day 4-for-4. In the circle, Keen picked up her second victory of the tournament.
Nebraska concluded the tournament with a rematch against Michigan. The Huskers took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when senior Anne Steffan scored on an RBI by sophomore Jamie Waldecker.
Michigan added an unearned run in the fifth off DeBuhr to set the stage for a dramatic bottom of the seventh.
In the seventh, junior Lizzy Rock reached on a two-strike single to lead off the inning. Steffan followed with a bunt single and junior Jessica Yoachim advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt.
With runners on second and third and only one out, Waldecker successfully executed a squeeze bunt on a 2-1 count, and Rock crossed the plate for the winning run in the Huskers’ 2-1 victory.
For the game, Waldecker finished with two RBIs as Nebraska pounded out 10 hits. In the circle, DeBuhr pitched a complete game and did not allow an earned run.
Nebraska, which is 9-1 this fall, concludes its fall season by hosting the Husker Fall Classic at Bowlin Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. The tournament begins on Saturday when Colorado State takes on Kansas at 10 a.m. Nebraska’s first game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Saturday against Colorado State.
