Huskers Continue Strong Start

Lincoln -- The Nebraska men's tennis team returned to the court Saturday for its second day of the Nebraska Invitational at the Cather-Pound Courts. The Huskers enjoyed success throughout the warm day.

 

Coach Kerry McDermott was pleased with how his team handled the long day under the sun.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

 

“I thought that our conditioning over the off-season really paid off for us today,” McDermott said.  “I think that overall it was a good day.  We were able to play a lot of different people.”

 

In the first singles match, <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska dominated Iowa by winning seven out of eight points.  Two Huskers won their first singles matches early in the fall season, with Marcus Karner defeating J.P Ritchie in three sets, 6-2, 6-4, and Joel Reckewey over Brett Taylor in straight sets, 7-6, 7-5.

 

In the second singles match, the Huskers continued their winning ways over Denver.  Jerry Posch continued his success with a victory over Adam Holmstrom, 6-3, 7-6, and Adrian Szatmary bounced back after dropping a set to Victor Zetterholm to win in the match’s only tiebreaker, 7-6, 3-7, 12-10.

 

In doubles, Nebraska also found success, as the Huskers took two of three points from Wisconsin.  Posch and Jose Rivera defeated Badgers Jeremy Sonkin and Elliot Bishop, 8-6, at the No. 1 doubles slot.

 

The Huskers also faced Drake in a doubles match.  Nebraska split two points with Posch and Joel Reckewey’s victory over Sergi Vila and Dalibor Pavic, 8-5.

 

The Huskers look to continue their success on Sunday when they return to the courts for the final day of the Nebraska Invitational.
