Jose Rivera Season 2004-05

Outlook: Jose Rivera has continued to improve his game over the past three seasons and looks to end his career on a strong note in 2005. Rivera has gained the confidence needed to pull out a tough victory after a strong junior campaign and offseason.

In the Fall (2004): Rivera earned a 7-5 overall record, including a 4-0 dual match mark. He reached the quarterfinals of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic to end the season before falling to teammate Joerg Barthel. Rivera also earned a 3-5 record on the doubles court, including a main draw quarterfinal berth with Barthel at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.

As a Junior (2003-04): Rivera won eight singles matches to rank fourth on the team, including a team-best four victories at the No. 3 position. He was one of two players to earn a winning record at the No. 4 slot with a 3-2 mark. In doubles action, Rivera and Joerg Barthel led the Huskers with a 10-9 record. The tandem had a 9-4 mark at the No. 2 spot, the most wins by any tandem. Rivera had the best fall campaign of any Husker, running to a 10-6 singles record while posting a 4-4 mark in doubles play. Off the court, he was a first-team academic All-Big 12 and two-time Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll selection.

As a Sophomore (2002-03): Rivera played primarily in doubles, earning an 8-13 record with three partners. He was 5-7 while teaming with Joerg Barthel, including a three-match win streak to open the season. The three victories put Rivera and Barthel in the ?B’ Flight doubles championship match at the Rice Invitational, where they fell to teammates Florian Preissler and Ryan Jay. In singles play, Rivera went 2-6 on the season, recording one victory each at the Nos. 3 and 4 spots. Rivera was a second-team academic All-Big 12 selection and was named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll twice.

As a Redshirt Freshman (2001-02): Rivera saw most of his action in the No. 5 and No. 6 slots, accumulating a 7-12 record in dual matches. Rivera won his first career match at the Rice Invitational, where he went 1-1 as one of just two Huskers to win on the opening weekend of the season. He was 1-4 in singles play during the fall season. In doubles action, Rivera teamed with former Husker Lance Mills, playing mostly at the No. 2 position while recording a 10-8 mark. Off the court, Rivera earned accolades in the classroom by being named second-team academic All-Big 12.

As a Freshman (2000-01): Rivera redshirted with injuries but was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in the spring of 2001.

High School: Rivera was ranked third nationally in singles and doubles play in Mexico for his age group during the 2000 season.

Personal: Jose is the son of J. Abraham Rivera and Idalia Juarez and was born Oct. 1, 1982, and has two brothers, Jesus and Juan Pablo. Jose is majoring in industrial engineering at Nebraska.
