Huskers Keep Rolling in Weekend Meets

Lincoln ? The Nebraska track and field team sent athletes to three meets across the country, putting up several noteworthy performances in Fremont, Neb., Chapel Hill, N.C., and Modesto, Calif., on Saturday.

 

In Fremont, the Huskers picked up 12 event victories on the day. In the field, Becky Breisch led the way for NU, posting a throw of 57-4 ? to win the women’s shot put. Leann Boerema also had a good day in the shot, finishing second with a toss of 52-1. Breisch also led a 1-2 finish in the discus with a mark of 185-4, followed by Jen Steiner’s throw of 158-10.

 

Freshman Kayla Wilkinson launched a career-best throw in the javelin with a toss of 150-10, improving her previous NCAA Regional-qualifying performance. Tia DeSoto won the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 176-6 and Jamie Senkbile took third, throwing it 163-0. Wrapping up the field events for Nebraska, Ashlee Dickinson won the women’s high jump with a leap of 5-6.

 

Three Huskers posted season-best times in the 400 meters to go 1-2-3, led by Maggi Escudero’s career-best time of 56.32. Danute Ceika was second in 56.69 and Dijana Kojic took bronze in 57.64.

 

Lindsey Finkner ran a personal-best time of 11:47.75 in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase to win the event by nearly 48 seconds after just picking up the event this season. Kim Pancoast recorded a win in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.67.

 

Justine Roach ran to a first-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.46.

 

On the men’s side, Marcus Sedberry recorded a personal-best time of 21.79 to take second-place in the 200 meters. He also won the 400-meter dash in 49.13.

 

Eric Dall claimed victory in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:06.56. Senior Kyle Odvody took third place in the men’s high jump, clearing the bar at 6-7.

 

The small contingent of Huskers that traveled to the UNC Blue Heaven Classic in North Carolina also performed well. Na’Tassia Vice tied for the win in the women’s high jump, clearing a height of 5-8.

 

Freshman Jenny Green led the Husker pole vaulters with the win, clearing 13-5 ?. Christi Lehman and Jessie Graff tied for second place, as both got over the bar at 13-1 ?.

 

In the men’s pole vault, Brad Teeple tied for third place with a height of 16-4 ?. Danny Tylka tied for fifth with a mark of 15-7.

 

Nebraska will travel to Manhattan, Kan., Saturday, May 15, for the Ward Haylett Invitational, while most teams across the country compete in their conference championships. The Big 12 moved the conference meet up two weeks to accommodate all schools’ final exam schedules, leaving three weeks between the conference and regional meets for the Huskers.
