Huskers Defeat Indiana in Extra Innings

Houston, Texas ? Freshman shortstop Devin Porter successfully executed a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the eighth inning to bring home the winning run and push the No. 12 Huskers to a 5-4 win over Indiana Sunday afternoon at the Crowne Plaza Classic.

With the scored tied at 4-4 after seven innings, Nebraska sent third baseman Carmen Kier to second base in the bottom of the eighth in accordance with the international tiebreaker rule. Liz Lawhorn moved Kier to third with a sacrifice bunt. Porter then plated Kier for the victory.

With the win, the Huskers improved to 6-4 overall and ended the weekend at Cougar Field with a 4-1 mark.

Senior outfielder Nicole Trimboli, batted third in the lineup for the first time this season, was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Peaches James (4-2) was the winning pitcher for NU, allowing one run on two hits in 5.0 innings of relief. Freshman Ashley DeBuhr started the game and gave up three runs on six hits in 3.0 innings.

Megan Roark was the losing pitcher, allowing one run on two hits in the final 5.1 innings for Indiana (4-6).

Nebraska, sparked by a lineup change, scored in the first, second and third innings. Senior second baseman Anne Steffan led off and was hit by a pitch. Sheena Lawrick grounded out and moved her to second. Trimboli then ripped an RBI single to right for the first run.

In the second inning, freshman Jamie Waldecker led off with the first home run of her career. Kier was then hit by a pitch and advanced to third on consecutive ground outs to second by Lawhorn and Porter. Steffan then brought Kier home with a single up the middle.

Indiana tied the game after a three-run third inning. Abby Stark led off with a double before DeBuhr retired the next two hitters. Ashley Griffiths singled to score Stark and pull the Hoosiers closers at 3-1. Karly McCormack then belted a two-run home run to tie the score at 3-3.

NU took control again in the bottom of the third, as Trimboli led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by senior Brittney Yolo.

Indiana tied the score once again in the top of the sixth when Kim Richards’ grounded out with the bases loaded, scoring McCormack.

Nebraska returns to action Friday, Feb. 27, at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga.
