Nebraska Track and Field Athletes Named to Big 12 Academic Team

Lincoln - Twenty-eight Husker track and field athletes were named to the Academic All-Big 12 first and second teams, the Big 12 Conference office announced this week.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 or higher grade-point average either cumulatively or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his or her team's scheduled contests. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 GPA or better, while the second team is made up of athletes with a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

The Nebraska women were represented on the first team by Shelley-Ann Brown (Biological Sciences), Cheryl Harmon (Communications Studies), Vicki Janovec (Exercise Science), Emily Waibel (English), Ann Gaffigan (Computer Science), Kathryn Handrup (Elementary Education), Nicole Kadyszewski (Pre-Architecture), Christina Lehman (Pre-Nursing), Anne Shadle (Exercise Science), and Renee Wageman (Math Education).

The men honored on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team included James Bowler (Geography), P.J. Grosserode (Business Administration), James Lee (Electrical Engineering), Casey Thom (Classics), Dana Carne (Biological Sciences), Colin Damas (Business Administration), Danny Hill (Finance), J.D. Kristenson (Finance), Adam Patrick (Social Science), Chris Richardson (Theatre), Paul Wilson (English), Jesse Colburn (Finance), Kevin Johnson (Finance), Eric Rasmussen (Social Science), Thomas Donlin (Mechanical Engineering), Andy Nelson (Electrical Engineering), and Tim Williams (Art).

The Huskers had five student-athletes named to the Big 12 Academic Second Team, including Krisztina Kovesi (Business Administration), Na'Tassia Vice (Broadcasting), Mike Kamm (Broadcasting), Jess Kirchhoff (Diversified Ag. Studies) and Carl Myerscough (Art).

The Big 12 Conference honored 290 track and field athletes on the 2003 Men's and Women's Track and Field Academic All-Big 12 Teams.

Nebraska will compete at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 17-19, at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. The men's team will try to capture the first-ever back-to-back Big 12 Outdoor titles in the history of the conference. The women will battle Texas and two-time defending champion Kansas State for the Big 12 crown.
