Shawn Charles spent four seasons in Lincoln as an assistant coach for the Huskers from 2001-05. Charles helped turn an 8-9-0 program in 2002 into a 19-2-1 powerhouse in 2005, as Nebraska amassed a 62-21-1 record during his tenure. Charles helped coached 11 Husker All-Americans, including four-time All-American Bryan Snyder. Charles was part of a Husker coaching staff that guided Nebraska to one of its best seasons ever in 2004, as NU claimed second at the Big 12 Championships and fifth at the NCAA Championships.
Before coming to Nebraska, Charles, a four-time All-American at Arizona State, was the head assistant coach for four seasons at Central Michigan.
During his four seasons with the Chippewas, Charles helped coach 10 wrestlers to All-America honors, including 1999 157-pound NCAA Champion Casey Cunningham. During Charles’ tenure, CMU finished in the top 20 three times and the top 10 twice, including a fifth-place finish in 1998 and a seventh-place showing in 1999.
Charles started his coaching career at Iowa State as an assistant from 1993 to 1995. After coaching the Cyclones, he served as an assistant at Phoenix College during the 1995-96 season, before moving on to coach Oklahoma’s freestyle club team in 1996.
As a collegiate competitor at Arizona State, Charles became the first four-time All-American in Sun Devil history and was an NCAA finalist in both his junior and senior seasons. Twice he was a Pac-10 champion at 126 pounds.
A member of the U.S. Freestyle team for seven years, Charles brings a wealth of international experience to the NU wrestling room. In 1996, he was an alternate and coach for the Olympic Freestyle team. A 1998 U.S. Open champion, Charles vied for a spot on the 2000 Olympic Freestyle team, coming up short at 138.75 pounds. Charles took second at both the U.S. Open and the Kiev International tournament in 1999. He was also a member of the gold medal winning Team USA at the Goodwill Games in 1998.
In April of 2003, Charles was an assistant coach for Team USA and earned a gold medal at the 2003 World Cup in Boise, Idaho.
A native of Tucson, Ariz., Charles earned his bachelor's degree in computer information systems from Arizona State in 1993. He and his wife Jill have two sons, Shawn Jr. and Titus Crayle.
