2010-11 (Senior)
NCAA Championships
Koehnlein participated in his second consecutive NCAA Tournament, but was unable to pick up a victory. Koehnlein gave No.1 seed Kellen Russel of Michigan everything he could handle in the opening round before falling, 5-3. Koehnlein ended his NU career with a major decision loss to Vicente Varela from Hofstra.
Big 12 Championships
Koehnlein got off to a rough start by falling to Oklahoma State's Josh Kindig by pin in 2:13, but responded with a 5-4 decision over No. 15 Chris Drouin of Iowa State in his next match to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Koehnlein was knocked from the tournament by Kindig in their second match of the tournament, falling by a 9-4 decision.
Regular Season
The senior kicked off his season on fire with three-straight victories to open dual competition over Pittsburgh's Mike Tully, Ohio State's Colin Palmer and Zachary Hancock from Bucknell. Koehnlein continued his solid wrestling at the Midlands Championships, where he went 2-2, including a victory over No. 20 Kaleb Friedley of Northwestern for his first triumph over a ranked opponent during the season.
Koehnlein collected a title at the Quality Hotel Open, before traveling to the Lone Star Duals where he won two matches against Jordan Gray from Stanford and Brown's Christopher Howard. Koehnlein's highlight of the regular season came against No. 17 Josh Kindig in the Huskers' dual against Oklahoma State. Koehnlein defeated Kindig by a 10-4 decision which helped him finish with a 16-11 regular-season record.
To go along with his 16 victories, Koehnlein finished the year with one pin, two technical falls and three major decision, while accounting for 27 dual points at 141 pounds.
2009-10 (Junior)
NCAA Championships
Koehnlein suffered a pair of defeats in his first NCAA Championship appearance. The junior opened the tournament against No. 12 Michael Mangrum of Oregon State and lost by technical fall, 17-2, before being eliminated by Dalton Jensen of Iowa State by a 9-5 decision.
Big 12 Championships
As the fourth seed, Koehnlein was unable to tally a win at the conference tournament as he was eliminated by No. 16 Todd Schavrien of Missouri (14-6 MD) after a first-round loss to Dalton Jensen of Iowa State (11-2 MD).
Regular Season
Koehnlein established himself as Nebraska's 141-pound starter from the beginning of the season when he began his Division I career with a 12-2 major decision win over Trey Bertram of Wisconsin. He went on to an impressive 11-4 record through three weeks, including four victories in a row at the Las Vegas Invitational, where he finished 5-2.
Koehnlein met three top-10 ranked opponents in December, but rebounded to win three straight heading into the New Year. In January and February, the 141-pounder went 5-6, including an upset over No. 18 Dalton Jensen of Iowa State by a 4-2 decision. That victory ended an 11-9 dual campaign.
Koehnlein had one pin and two technical falls during the regular season. He also had four major decisions, tying him for the second-most on the team along with C.J. Napier and Stephen Dwyer.
Before Nebraska
Koehnlein wrapped up his career at Cerritos College (Norwalk, Calif.) with the 141-pound state championship to conclude a 39-4 season. For the second year in a row, Koehnlein earned All-America honors after he placed fourth at the state meet in 2008. In his freshman season at Cerritos, he also won the Southern California Championship and was a first-team All-South Coast Conference selection.
Koehnlein was a two-time state qualifier at Marina High School in Westminster, Calif. As a senior, he went 51-6 and placed second at the Southern Section Masters Tournament and third at the Five Counties Tournament. He was also a two-time team captain and named the squad's Most Valuable Freshman before earning the Most Improved Wrestler award as a sophomore.
Personal Information
Mike is the son of Michael Koehnlein and Judy Demers and was born on March 19, 1988 in Norwalk, Calif. He has two sisters, Victoria and Becky, and one brother, Cole. Mike is majoring in sociology at Nebraska.
