Career Notes 

1993 - In his senior season at Nebraska, Gardner became an All-American after placing fourth at the NCAA Championships at heavyweight. Gardner’s dominant performance helped Nebraska to place third overall with a team score of 79.50. The senior from Afton, Wyo. posted 11 pins and two tech. falls in his Husker career. 

1992- In his first season as a Husker, the former two-time junior college national champion proved to be a solid anchor for the Huskers, as he posted a 24-10-2 record and qualified for the NCAA tournament. Gardner was regarded as one of the top contenders for national honors at heavyweight in 1993. Gardner was unranked in the preseason, but moved into the rankings early in the season after finishing first at the UNO Open and eighth at the Las Vegas Invitational. He finished the season ranked No. 11, seeded No. 12 and posted a 2-2 record at the NCAA Championships, losing to the No. 5 seed Mike Anderson of Arizona State and the No. 4 seed Kirk Mammen of Oklahoma State. Gardner finished third at the Big Eight Championships with a 2-1 record, including a pin and a major decision. He posted a 9-4-2 dual record, including a deciding pin in Nebraska's 21-18 win at Minnesota and nine of his 10 losses came against ranked wrestlers, and the other was to a Division III All-American.

Other - Junior college national champion at Ricks (Idaho) College in 1991, and placed third at the NJCAA tourney in his freshman season. He was 42-1 at Ricks in 1991, with his only loss coming shortly after he was involved in a serious automobile accident. He posted an overall mark of 94-6 in two seasons at Ricks and compiled a career record of 94-21 at Star Valley High School. He was all-state and all-region in his high school football career and also holds the Star Valley school record in the shot put and discus.
