1990: In the regular season, Herrera earned a first-place finish at the Wyoming Open and a second-place finish at the St. Louis Open. The senior finished the season with a 33-11-0 record and went 19-5-0 in dual action…Earned a runner-up finish at the Big Eight Championships after falling to Oklahoma’s Joe Reynolds, 12-1…At the NCAA Championships, Herrera went 3-2 before facing Darren Schulman (Syracuse) in the seventh-place bout where he claimed seventh and earned his first All-American honor.
1989: Had arthroscopic knee surgery prior to the season and got off to a 6-7-1 start... made the turn at semester healthy and caught fire, winning 14 of his last 18 matches and qualifying for the NCAA Championships... only the second juco transfer in NU history to qualify for the NCAA tournament with Johnnie Selmon…did not place at the national meet after a rib injury forced him to default his fifth match to Brian Dolph of Indiana, costing him All-America honors ... picked up three wins at the NCAA meet, including a pin (5:16) over 12th-seeded Tom Ryan of Syracuse ... finished an impressive third at the Big Eight meet... avenged an earlier tournament loss to Missouri's Greg Warren with a 14-7 decision in the bout for third place... all but one of his 11 losses were to ranked opponents... was ranked 9th by Amateur Wrestling News heading into the NCAA meet ..
OTHER: Transferred from Golden West Community College in El Toro, Calif, where he compiled a 50-1 record en route to two consecutive California juco titles... invited to the Olympic Trials in Topeka, Kan., after finishing second at the qualifying tournament in Las Vegas... finished his prep career at Grand Junction High School in 1986 with a 76-13 record.
