Regular Season
McCoy Newberg produced a solid season in seven open tournaments, where he compiled a 24-8 record at 174 pounds. He collected eight pins, three major decisions and one technical fall as a redshirt freshman. Newberg placed in five tournaments, claiming the titles at the Bob Smith Open and Cusatis Open. He finished second at the Viking-Warrior Open, third at the Nebraska-Kearney Holiday Inn Open and fourth at the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open.

Regular Season
Newberg competed at 174 pounds and compiled a 25-12 record as a redshirt. He notched nine pins, one technical fall and three major decisions, earning three top-five open tournament finishes. After taking fourth at the Nebraska-Kearney Holiday Inn Open, Newberg took runner-up honors at the Bob Smith Open before finishing third at the UNK Loper Open.
Before Nebraska
The first recruit to join the Husker program from the state of Tennessee since Matt Keller in 2002-03, Newberg was a two-time state placer at the DI Tennessee state wrestling championships, including a first-place finish his junior season at 160 pounds. Newberg finished his junior year with a 51-2 record and won the Most Outstanding Wrestler award in his division for his efforts on the mat.
Newberg was dominant during his state championships season, recording 157 takedowns, 23 pins and 11 technical falls. As a sophomore, Newberg finished third at the state championships which helped him reach his 129 career win total. Newberg is a two-time NHSCA All-American, including a second-place finish in 2009 as a freshman.
Personal
The son of John and Karen Newberg, McCoy was born on May 11, 1994. He has one brother, Thomas, 15. McCoy is majoring in business administration at Nebraska.
