2009-Burns wrestled to a 14-5 record in 2008-09, including working his way into the starting dual lineup, but a knee injury at National Duals forced him to the sidelines.

Burns was impressive in early-season open tournaments, placing in the top two at three events. He posted a 4-1 mark to finish second at the Kaufman-Brand Open on Nov. 22, and followed with a 5-0 showing, including three bonus-point wins, to win the Fort Hays State Open on Dec. 6. Burns also placed second with a 4-1 mark at the UNK Loper Open on Dec. 13.

Burns went 1-1 in his first day in the Husker dual lineup. He lost an 8-0 major decision to fourth-ranked Kellen Russell of Michigan, but pinned Northern Colorado’s Lance Gallegos in 2:53. Burns lost two close decisions to No. 16 Keith Sulzer of Northwestern and Penn State’s Frank Molinaro at National Duals, before a torn meniscus ended his season. He applied for and was granted a medical hardship for the season.

Before Nebraska-Burns joins the Huskers after a standout high school career. In his freshman year at Cary High School, he finished third at the state tournament and took home the 140-pound title in the Jim King/Orange Invitational. Burns sat out his sophomore year after transferring to Cardinal Gibbons High School, but rebounded with two phenomenal seasons. In his junior year, Burns finished with a 65-0 season and won the state championship before capping his year by winning the 140-pound title at the National High School Coaches Association Wrestling Championships.

His senior year was just as impressive, as he notched a 63-0 record and won his second consecutive state title. He followed with a win in the 145-pound division of the prestigious Ironman tournament and was named the wrestler of the year by the National High School Coaches Association. The NHSCA also selected him as a two-time All-American.

Burns ended with a 178-5 career mark in high school, including 128-0 in his final two years. He was ranked No. 3 at 145 pounds by InterMat.

In the classroom, he was a member of National Honor Society and was named to the honor roll three of his final four semesters.

Personal
The son of Albert and Billie Burns, Jon was born on May 28, 1990, in Harvey, Ill. He has three brothers, Mark, Tim and Chris and one sister, Marguerite. Jon has not declared a major at Nebraska.
