1990: In the regular season, Malecek earned a first-place finish at the Wyoming Open and Las Vegas Invitational, along with a third-place finish at the St. Louis Open. The senior finished the season with a 39-4-2 record and went 21-1-2 in dual action…Earned the Big Eight Championship title at heavyweight after defeating Jamie Cutler of Iowa State, 8-0…At the NCAA Championships, Malecek went 4-2 before facing Ohio State’s Eric Shultz in the seventh-place bout where he claimed seventh and earned his first All-American honor.
1989: Redshirted... finished the year with a 10-3 open tournament record with three pins and finished third at the St. Louis Open after a tough 3-2 semi-final loss to Wisconsin's third-ranked Todd Seiler.
1988: Placed fourth in the Big Eight and received a wild-card berth to the NCAA Championships. Finished the season 19-13, with six of his losses coming to 1988 All-Americans.
1987: Missed the final two months of the season with a career-threatening neck injury. His sophomore season ended with a 20-12-0 record including eight wins in his last 11 matches before the injury. He placed in the top five of five open tournaments.
1986: Part-time starter at 190 as a freshman, posting a 5-11-0 mark before moving up to the heavyweight class.
Other: 64-2-0 in his final two prep seasons and was the 1985 Iowa State champion. Malecek was an all-state running back who led Iowa's Class AA in rushing as a senior.
