Gary Albright attended Billings West High School in Billings, Montana. Albright won the  Montana high school state championship in 1980 with a 55-2 record. He was a member of the U.S. team from 1981 to 1984, where he became the 1981 Greco-Roman Eliete champion and the 1982 national Open Freestyle Champion.
