1994 - Went into the National tournament seeded third, but was upset by Virginia’s Mike Krafchick in the first round.
1993 - Velazquez entered the meet as the ninth seed and posted a 5-2 record and earned All-America honors. The junior lost a tough 5-3 overtime decision to Marco Sanchez of Arizona State in the second round. He rebounded with three consecutive victories in the consolation bracket and eventually finished seventh.
Big Eight Championships
1994 - As a senior, Velazquez won his second consecutive 134-pound Big Eight title, becoming the first Husker to accomplish that feat since 1981. The Husker won his second title in a thrilling, 7-5 overtime win over Iowa State’s Derek Mountsier.
1993 - Velazquez entered the meet seeded second and opened the tournament with a hard-fought 2-1 decision over Oklahoma's Ryan Hager. He captured the Big Eight title with a 6-5 decision over Iowa State's 12th-ranked Derek Mountsier in the finals. In the championship match, Velazquez scored an escape with five seconds left to account for the final margin.
Season Notes
1994 -The senior from Wenatchee, Wash., grabbed a title at the Wyoming Open and two second-place finishes at UNO Open and the Great Plains Open. Velazquez ended his senior season with a 24-3 overall record and 11-1 in dual competition, posting a 49-10 mark for his two-year NU career.
1993 - Velazquez was hampered the entire season by a knee injury, but came on strong at the end of the season and was ranked No. 7 in the final Amateur Wrestling News rankings. He had a record of 10-4 on Jan. 9, but posted a 15-3 record after that point and his only dual loss was to Penn State's Cary Kolat, who finished second at the NCAA meet. Velazquez had nine major decisions and two pins, placing second at the Great Plains Open and third at UNO Open.
Other - Was a two-time junior college National Champion at North Idaho Junior College, where he compiled a two-year record of 82-11. He was a three-time Washington State high school champion and four-time finalist at Chelam High, with a four-year record of 105-3.
