Career Notes
2008-Wrestling in two open tournaments, Weitzel went 1-4 at 133 pounds during the 2008-09 season. Weiztel went 0-2 at the Cowboy Open on Nov. 10 and 1-2 at the Kaufman-Brand Open on Nov. 17.
Before Nebraska-Weitzel won the state championship after going 42-2 as a senior at Dolores High School under the tutelage of Coach Joe Duran. Weitzel netted four top-five state tournament finishes in a high school career that saw him earn a 151-18 record. He finished second at 103 pounds as a freshman, fifth as a sophomore and third as a junior.
Weitzel earned four letters in wrestling, one in baseball and one in football in his high school career. Off the mat, he was a member of the National Honor Society. Weitzel is one of two Colorado natives in NU’s 2007-08 freshman class, along with heavyweight Tucker Lane.
Personal-The son of Robert and Rita Weitzel, Dustin was born on Aug. 6, 1989. He has one sister, Audrey (19). Dustin is a biological sciences major at Nebraska.
