Redshirt freshman Derek Pirner will look to contribute at 125 pounds in a weight class vacated by 2004 NCAA Champion Jason Powell.
Career Notes
2004-Pirner redshirted while earning a 15-5 open record and splitting time between 133 and 141 pounds. Before a knee injury cut his year short, Pirner had won four of his last five matches, including the last two by fall.
Before <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska-A six-year letterwinner for coaches Dan Swateky and Ron Lewis at ElkPointHigh School, Pirner was a three-time state champion and a two-time runner up. In his senior year at Elk Point, Pirner was named the South Dakota Wrestler of the Year, while earning honorable-mention All-America honors. Pirner compiled a career record of 241-24. He also lettered four years in football and twice in track.
Personal-The son of Randy and Crystal Pirner, Derek was born on Oct. 9, 1984. Derek has one brother, Grayson 18, and one sister, Tiffany, 16. Pirner is majoring in elementary education.
