NCAA Championships
1996-Nelson posted a 5-3 mark at the 1996 NCAA Championships to place eighth and earn his first All-America honors. Nelson was pinned by sixth-seeded Gerald Carr of Minnesota in the opening round, but rebounded with five straight wins. In the wrestlebacks, Nelson earned a 15-6 major decision over Georgia State's Robert MacArthur, posting a 6-4 decision against Ohio State's Will Knight and claimed an 8-3 decision against Cal-Bakersfield's Johnny McCreary. Nelson advanced with back-to-back 11-7 decisions over West Virginia's Scott Hage and Wyoming's Brad Alderman, before ending his career with losses to Iowa State's Barry Weldon and Indiana's Mike Powell.

Career Notes
1996-NU's starter at 167 pounds, Nelson notched a 26-12 overall record and went 6-4 in duals. He posted three technical falls and four major decisions. He finished second at the St. Louis Open, while winning the Nebraska-Kearney Open and Great Plains Invitational.
1995-Nelson claimed a 14-8 record on the year as a part-time starter at 167 pounds. He went 4-4 in duals with three pins, one technical fall and one major decision on the year. Nelson finished second at the Omaha and Great Plains opens and was fourth at the Mat Town Invitational. His longest winning streak of the season was four matches in early January.
1994-Nelson posted a 20-9 record, before injury his left knee in a match against Iowa State's Barry Weldon at National Duals. Nelson won 167-pound championships at the Wyoming and Kearney opens and finished second at both the Omaha and Great Plains opens. He opened the season with seven consecutive victories, then dropped his next two matches. Nelson later reeled off nine consecutive wins from Dec. 11 to Jan. 8. Included in that stretch of victories was a 7-6 win over eventual national champion Mark Branch of Oklahoma State in a dual between the two squads on Jan. 7. Nelson had five pins, two technical falls and five major decisions on the season. He posted a 6-6 dual record. He was one of two Husker team captains along with senior Frank Velazquez.
1993-As a freshman, Nelson posted a mark of 19-5 and had a 5-2 dual record, while filling in for injured starter Tommy Robbins for a month at midseason. Nelson had five major decisions, a technical fall and a pin. He placed third at the Wyoming, Omaha and Great Plains opens and posted a seven-match winning streak during the season.
1992- Nelson redshirted and competed in open tournaments while posting an 11-7 record in exhibition action. He finished third at the Midwest Championships and fifth at the Wyoming Open. Nelson was named Nebraska's Redshirt of the Year.
Before Nebraska-Nelson was the No. 7 overall recruit by Amateur Wrestling News in 1991. He was a three-time Minnesota state champion at 171 pounds and had a 107-match win streak during his career at Stewartville High School. The streak ended with a draw. Nelson was a second-team All-America selection by Amateur Wrestling News and was named Minnesota Wrestler of the Year in 1991.
