2008-Baier posted a 5-5 mark, including 3-2 in duals, at 133 pounds for the Huskers in 2007-08. Baier opened with a 7-3 decision over Wyoming Brandon Gifford on Nov. 9, but went 1-1 in the Cowboy Open the following day. Baier lost a 10-2 major decision to Lehigh's Kevin Vinh on Nov. 16, and posted a 1-2 mark in the elite division of the Kaufman-Brand Open on Nov. 17.
Baier claimed two dual wins over South Dakota State and Dana opponents in December, and ended his season with an 11-10 dual loss to Rider's Thomas Lorenzo. He earned two pins during the season.
2007-Baier won nine of his last 12 matches on the season to close the year with a 15-9 record, including two top-four finishes in his last two tournaments of the year.
At the Dana College Open on Jan. 6, Baier finished third at 133 pounds by winning his last four matches in the consolation bracket after losing in the second round. On Jan. 20, Baier rebounded from a first-round loss to Michigan State’s Micah Carter to win four straight matches in the consolation bracket before falling in the third-place match to Jeff Rau of Nebraska-Omaha.
Earlier in the year, Baier went 2-2 at the Harold Nichols Open, winning his first two matches on Nov. 11. After a 1-2 showing at the Kaufman-Brand Open on Nov. 18, Baier finished 3-2 at the UNI Open in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
2006-Baier finished his first year in the program with an 8-8 record wrestling mainly at 125 pounds. Baier’s best performance came at the Kaufman-Brand Open in Omaha, Neb., on Nov. 19. After a sudden-victory loss, Baier rattled off three straight wins in the consolation bracket before a narrow 5-3 loss to Cory Fish of Boise State. That came after Baier finished 3-2 at the Harold Nichols Open a week earlier. Baier won by major decision in the first round over Josh Pratt of Buena Vista before losing in the second round. After two wins in the consolation bracket, Baier lost to Ben Hanisch of Iowa State.
Before Nebraska-Baier closed his varsity wrestling career at Nodaway Valley High School in Greenfield, Iowa, with a state championship. Baier, who also finished second in 2004, was a three-time state qualifier for Coach Tim Duff. Along with his four letters in wrestling, Baier was a three-year letterman in baseball and football and earned one monogram in track. Baier was honored as an all-conference performer in wrestling, football and baseball.
Personal-Austin, the son of Tim and Joni Baier, was born April 24, 1987, in Greenfield, Iowa. Baier has two brothers, Jared (16) and Kolby (13). Austin is majoring in business administration.
