2009-Pokorny wrestled to a 9-16 record at 125 pounds, including 5-13 in duals, during 2008-09. He had two pins and two technical falls on the year.
Pokorny started the season on a high note, posting two bonus-point victories in his first two dual appearances. Pokorny notched a 17-0 technical fall over Augustana’s Cody Lensing on Nov. 28 and pinned Oregon State’s Jake Gonzales later in the day.
The Bennington, Neb., native went 0-2 at the Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 5, but rebounded to place second at the UNK Loper Open on Dec. 13. Pokorny earned a 4-1 mark before losing to Northern Colorado’s Tony Mustari in the final. Pokorny wrestled a tough spring semester, facing 10 ranked foes in his final 16 matches of the regular season, including five opponents in the top eight.
Pokorny entered the postseason on a two-match winning streak after posting dual decisions over UNC Greensboro’s Mitchell Johnson and North Carolina’s Nick Shields.
2008-Pokorny’s redshirt campaign got off to a rough start as he sat out the fall semester with heart problems. Returning in January, Pokorny wrestled to a 9-1 mark in two open tournaments at 125 pounds.
Pokorny finished third with a 5-1 performance at the Dana Open on Jan. 5, including a 9-0 major decision over Dana’s Kevin Gray.
Pokorny claimed the title with four straight victories at the Brand Open on Jan. 19. Pokorny opened the tournament with three bonus-point wins, including a technical fall, pin and major decision on his way to first place.
Before Nebraska-Pokorny was a three-time state champion, winning the 2007 Class C crown at 125 pounds after winning at 112 pounds in 2006 and 103 in 2005. A 2006 Junior Freestyle All-American, Pokorny was the fourth-ranked 112-pound wrestler in the nation by Wrestling USA, and was the No. 52 high school wrestler overall by Intermat. Off the mat, he graduated with a 4.0 GPA and scored 33 on his ACT. He was also a member of the National Honor Society.
Personal
The son of Alan and Renee Pokorny, Andy was born on June 3, 1989. He has one sister, Kristin, and two brothers, Craig and Josh. Andy is a psychology major at Nebraska.
