Feature Story - Huskers. Together. (Annika Stewart, 2020)

Senior (2023-24)
Annika (pronounced AH-nick-ah) Stewart was a major contributor inside as a fourth-year Husker in 2023-24. She provided a reliable presence inside throughout her career and proved herself as a dangerous three-point shooter. 

Over Nebraska's final four games of 2023-24, Stewart totaled 24 points and eight rebounds in just over 35 total minutes while connecting on 4-of-5 three-pointers against NCAA Tournament qualifiers Maryland and Texas A&M along with No. 3 Iowa and No. 12 Oregon State.

Also a standout in the classroom, Stewart is a 2023 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.

Stewart had 12 points and five rebounds in 21 minutes over three games at the Big Ten Tournament. Over her final eight games, she totaled 46 points and 16 rebounds in 67 minutes while going 8-for-11 from three-point range.

The 6-3 post player erupted for a season-high-tying 13 points to go with five rebounds, an assist and a season-high two steals in just 15 minutes in a win over Northwestern (Feb. 20). 

Stewart opened the season with 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocks in 20 minutes off in Nebraska’s victory over Northwestern State (Nov. 6). She matched a pair of career highs by going 5-for-6 at the free throw line against the Lady Demons. 

She missed NU’s next eight games with a right leg injury suffered in practice (Nov. 13), before returning to the court in a win over Southern (Dec. 17).

She hit a three-pointer at Kansas (Dec. 20), before scoring her 500th career point in Nebraska’s first-ever home win against Maryland (Dec. 31). Stewart hit a pair of three-pointers against Indiana (Jan. 7). She capped her Husker career with eight points, including a pair of three-pointers, while grabbing three rebounds in just over 10 minutes in a loss at No. 12 Oregon State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament (March 24). She had four points in a first-round NCAA Tournament win over Texas A&M (March 22).

Stewart averaged 3.8 points and 1.6 rebounds in 6.9 minutes per game on the season. She hit 45.5 percent of her field goals and 38.5 percent of her threes. She played in 25 of Nebraska's 35 games, helping the Big Red to a 23-12 overall record and an 11-7 Big Ten mark. Nebraska advanced to the Big Ten Championship Game and the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Junior (2022-23)
Stewart continued to make significant contributions for the Huskers in her third season at Nebraska in 2022-23. She appeared in all 33 games while making the first four starts of her career. She averaged 5.4 points and 2.9 rebounds.

Stewart was 4-0 as a starter, including 3-0 in place of an injured Isabelle Bourne (Wisconsin, Samford, Wyoming) in early December, and 1-0 in place of Alexis Markowski in a win over Northwestern (Feb. 26).

Stewart produced double figures four times in 2022-23, including career highs of 23 points and eight rebounds in a season-high 23 minutes off the bench in Nebraska's win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Puerto Rico (Nov. 25). She went 8-for-10 from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point range, and 4-for-4 at the free throw line in the 73-44 win over the Islanders, who advanced to the 2023 Postseason WNIT.

She opened the season with 10 points and seven rebounds in just 15 minutes in a run past Omaha (Nov. 7), before adding 10 points at No. 9 Virginia Tech (Dec. 1). The Hokies went on to the NCAA Women's Final Four as the ACC champions.

Stewart added 10 points and six rebounds in her first career start in NU's Big Ten win over Wisconsin (Dec. 7). She contributed eight points and five rebounds in a second straight start in a win over Samford (Dec. 10). She made her third start in a win over eventual WNIT qualifier Wyoming (Dec. 18). 

She scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds against No. 14 Michigan (Dec. 28), before just missing a double-double with nine points on 4-of-5 shooting and a career-high nine rebounds against No. 11 Maryland (Jan. 22). The Terps advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight.

Stewart added eight points and a pair of three-pointers in Nebraska's win at Northwestern (Feb. 6). She scored in each of Nebraska's final 14 games and 31 of NU's 33 games on the season.

Sophomore (2021-22)
Stewart continued to be a key contributor in her second season at Nebraska. She averaged 5.1 points and 2.1 rebounds in nine minutes per game over 27 contests. 

Stewart scored in double figures five times, including a career-high 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field in just 15 minutes off the bench in a victory over Wyoming (Dec. 22). She knocked down a trio of three-pointers and blocked a career-high three shots against the Cowgirls. It followed a 10-point, five-rebound performance in just 12 minutes off the bench in a win over Drake (Dec. 19). For her efforts in those two games, Stewart earned a spot on the Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll (Dec. 27).

She produced a huge 12-point effort in 10 minutes off the bench in a Big Ten quarterfinal win over No. 10 Michigan (March 4). She opened the season with 12 points, five rebounds, a block and a steal in a win over 2021 America East champion Maine (Nov. 9), before pouring in 15 points in just over 12 minutes in a win over North Carolina Central (Nov. 20). 

Stewart scored six points on a pair of three-pointers in Nebraska's 79-58 win over No. 8 Michigan (Jan. 4). She missed six games during the season while battling a nagging injury. 

Overall, Stewart averaged 22.7 points and 9.4 rebounds per 40 minutes. She hit 34.4 percent (22-64) of her three-pointers on the year.

Freshman (2020-21)
Stewart played in all 26 games and averaged 6.4 points and 3.0 rebounds as a true freshman for the Huskers. She scored in double figures nine times, including 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting at Minnesota (Feb. 24) and 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting with a trio of three-pointers against Colorado in the Postseason WNIT (March 20).

Over her final seven games of 2020-21, Stewart hit 65.6 percent (21-32) of her field goals, including 63.2 percent (12-19) of her three-pointers. She had 55 points and 16 rebounds in 71 total minutes during the seven contests. Stewart opened the stretch with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting with a pair of threes in a win over Penn State (Feb. 21).

In her collegiate debut, Stewart got off to an impressive start with 12 points, seven rebounds, an assist, a block and two steals in 16 minutes of action in a 90-61 win over Oral Roberts (Dec. 4). Stewart hit her first five shots, including a pair of three-pointers, against the Golden Eagles to help shoot NU to victory.

She starred again off the bench with 15 points and two threes in just nine minutes in a 64-51 win over Idaho State (Dec. 6).

Stewart finished with 13 points, five rebounds, two assists and a block in a win over Wisconsin (Jan. 28), after pumping in 12 points on a career-high three threes at Illinois (Jan. 25). Stewart hit back-to-back threes in a one-minute span midway through the fourth quarter to give the Big Red the lead for good.

She scored 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including 2-of-3 threes at Rutgers (Feb. 7). She had 10 points, six rebounds and an assist at Creighton (Dec. 14).

Stewart supplied seven big points off the bench, including a clutch fourth-quarter three-pointer in NU’s upset of No. 15 Northwestern (Dec. 31). She contributed five points, three rebounds and two blocks to help Nebraska complete a season sweep at No. 24 Northwestern (Feb. 17). In Nebraska's first-round Postseason WNIT win over Ohio Valley Conference regular-season champion UT Martin (March 19), Stewart scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds while adding an assist, a steal and a block for the Big Red.

Before Nebraska
Stewart scored 27 points in her final game against Hopkins and Gatorade National High School Player of the Year Paige Bueckers in the 6-4A sectional championship game. 

Stewart averaged approximately 20.0 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists while hitting 65.6 percent of her two-point field goal attempts, 41.5 percent (39-94) of her threes and 89.5 percent (51-57) of her free throws as a senior. She led Wayzata to a 24-5 record with three of its losses coming to national No. 1 Hopkins. 

Over the final 12 games of the season, Stewart turned up her production to 25 points per contest. Stewart opened the 4A playoffs with 27 points in a win over Armstrong, before erupting for a season-high 36 points in a sectional semifinal win over St. Louis Park. Wayzata finished with a final No. 3 ranking in the state.

Stewart earned first-team Class 4A All-State honors from the Minnesota Girls Coaches Association, while also earning first-team All-Lake Conference honors. She was also an All-Metro selection.

Stewart averaged 12.2 points and 7.0 rebounds as a junior for 26-3 Wayzata, while earning All-Lake Conference and All-Metro honors. She produced 10.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game as a sophomore for the 25-3 Trojans to earn All-Lake Conference honors in her first season at the school. She played her eighth grade and freshman seasons in North Dakota at Minot's Bishop Ryan High School, before her family moved to Minneapolis. Wayzata was the No. 2 ranked team in Class 4A in Minnesota in both 2018 and 2019.

After coming off the bench as an eighth grader, Stewart averaged 15.2 points and 7.1 rebounds as a freshman for Bishop Ryan. She earned all-region and all-conference honors while helping Bishop Ryan to a 20-5 record on the season. She totaled 1,675 points, 836 rebounds, 130 blocks and 119 three-pointers in her five high school seasons combined.

Stewart played her summer club basketball for North Tartan - the same program that produced Husker Sam Haiby (Moorhead). In the summer of 2019, Stewart earned an all-tournament selection at the Nike Boo Williams in Hampton, Va.

Personal
The daughter of Peter and Julie Stewart, Annika was born April 17, 2002, in Minot, N.D. She has an older sister, Hannah, who was a starting forward as a senior at Iowa in 2018-19. Annika also has an older brother, Elijah, is a U.S. Naval Academy graduate.

A nutrition and health sciences major, Annika earned her bachelor's degree from Nebraska in May of 2024. She was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in 2023 and 2024. The three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection was also a six-time Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll choice. She was also a four-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.

Stewart chose Nebraska over Minnesota and Iowa because of the overall environment of the program.

"I really like the coaching staff and the family atmosphere," Stewart said. "I believe it is a special place with great support to thrive as a student-athlete. I'm excited to be a Husker!"
