Freshman (2014-15)
After battling a nagging injury throughout the first half of the 2014-15 season, Chandler Smith played in Nebraska's final 17 games of 2014-15.
In 18 total games as a freshman, Smith averaged 1.8 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.8 assists in 10.8 minutes per game.
The 6-0 guard from Brewster, Wash., made her first career start in place of an injured Rachel Theriot at No. 21 Rutgers on Feb. 5. She then put up career highs of seven points and seven rebounds in a career-high 24 minutes off the bench at No. 5 Maryland on Feb. 8.
She closed the season with four points, including a three-pointer on her only field goal attempt, to go along with four rebounds, two assists and two blocks against Syracuse in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament in Columbia, S.C. She played 21 minutes against the Orange - her second-highest total of the season.
Smith added a rebound, an assist and a block in 11 minutes of Nebraska's second-round Big Ten Tournament victory over Illinois on March 5. She also saw playing time in the Big Ten quarterfinals against No. 14 Iowa on March 6.
Smith missed Nebraska's first five games as a true freshman with a stress fracture in her foot before making her lone appearance of the non-conference season against Northern Colorado Nov. 30. She scored one point and grabbed one rebound in three minutes against the Bears.
However, the pain returned and Smith missed the next six weeks before playing nine minutes against Penn State Jan. 15. She scored five points and dished out and assist in six minutes to contribute to Nebraska's win over Purdue Jan. 19. Smith added four points, three rebounds, an assist and a block in 16 minutes in a win at Wisconsin Jan. 22.
Smith matched her career high with seven rebounds while dishing out a career-best four assists against Minnesota Feb. 24. She added a key three-pointer, two rebounds and two assists in the Huskers' road win at Indiana Feb. 21.
One of the final pieces of Nebraska’s recruiting class, Smith was the final incoming freshman to join a Husker class that was ranked No. 9 nationally by ESPN - the highest ranking in Husker history. Smith, who played point guard for her high school and club teams, was ranked as the No. 18 wing in the country and No. 62 player overall in the ESPN HoopGurlz Top 100.
As a senior in 2013-14, Smith captured Washington Class 1A Player-of-the-Year honors after claiming first-team all-state accolades for the third consecutive season.
"Chandler will thrive in our offensive system," Nebraska Coach Connie Yori said. "She is a great passer, both in transition and half court. She has very good handles and can shoot. She is a good three-point shooter and hits the dribble jumper. She is smart, competitive, has great length and size on the perimeter and is a savvy player. Chandler is a mature young lady and a great student."
Before Nebraska
Smith was named the Washington Class 1A Player of the Year in both 2013 and 2014, while capturing first-team all-state honors for the third consecutive season.
She capped her prep career by scoring 18 points to lead Washington to an all-star win over Oregon in the Northwest Shootout.
Smith was a first-team Class 1A pick and the state tournament MVP as a junior in 2013, after earning first-team Class 2B all-state honors as a sophomore in 2012.
Smith powered Brewster to a Class 1A state championship as a junior in 2013. She scored 26 points and had 10 rebounds in the Bears’ 72-46 victory over Castle Rock in the state title game in Yakima on March 2. Smith hit four three-pointers and had 22 points in the first half alone to fuel the championship game victory. The Bears finished with a 26-1 record and Smith was a first-team all-state selection for the second straight year for Coach Roger Boesel. Smith was also a Class 1A Sportsmanship Award winner at the state tournament.
Smith averaged 21.3 points, 9.2 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 4.2 steals per game as a junior.
Smith, who was a four-year varsity starter, erupted for 35 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks as a sophomore in the 2012 Class 2B championship game against Reardan. Brewster fell by a narrow margin in the title game, but Smith was named a first-team Class 2B all-stater.
As a freshman in 2010-11, Smith averaged 16.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 5.7 steals and 1.5 blocked shots in 23 games for Brewster.
Smith played her club basketball for the Northwest Blazers Orange.
Personal
The daughter of Dale and Renee Smith, Chandler has two brothers, Davey and Cade. Chandler lives on a ranch outside of Brewster, Wash. She is majoring in agribusiness and earned spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall and spring semesters of 2014-15. She also claimed a place on the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2015.
She chose Nebraska over Gonzaga, Baylor and Arizona State.
"Nebraska stuck out for me because of its agriculture program, the coaches and players," Smith said. "Overall, it's a great fit."
