Sonija Nelson lettered during her freshman and sophomore seasons at Nebraska in 1981-82 and 1982-83. The 6-0 center from Kansas City, Mo., appeared in 26 games as a sophomore, averaging 2.4 points and 1.4 rebounds per game, while shooting 37.7 percent from the field and a solid 83.3 percent from the free throw line.
As a freshman, Nelson served as the backup to four-year starter and Nebraska career rebounding and blocked shot leader Janet Smith. Nelson finished her career with 79 points and 57 rebounds.
Nelson led Varsity Sports of Kansas City to a runner-up finish at the AAU National Championships in 1981. She was a graduate of Central High School in Kansas City.
She was a business administration major at Nebraska.
