Sara Hieb (pronounced HEEB) joined the Huskers in mid-December of 2005 as a walk-on. The 5-3 guard from Brandon, S.D., attended the University of Nebraska during the fall semester but was not a member of the basketball team until Finals Week.
Hieb was officially added to NU's roster on Dec. 15, after going through her first practice on Dec. 14. She was issued a No. 3 jersey on Dec. 16, and played in her first career game in the Huskers' 69-49 win at Michigan on Dec. 17.
She played in six games on the year, scoring her first career points with a three-pointer in Nebraska's 81-56 victory over Oklahoma State on Senior Night on Feb. 21 at the Devaney Center.
A talented singer, Hieb also produced a stellar rendition of the National Anthem prior to the Huskers' 62-59 WNIT win over Drake on March 16. She sang her first anthem at NU before a win over Kansas on Jan. 7, and she also sang the anthem at NU's men's basketball game against Texas Tech on Feb. 18.
Injuries in Nebraska's backcourt to seniors Jelena Spiric and Ivana Drmanac and sophomore Heather Kephart created a need for more depth. Hieb attended Nebraska Women's Basketball Camps as a high school player at Brandon Valley, and Coach Connie Yori offered Hieb an opportunity to help the Huskers during the second semester.
Hieb is a smart player with a good understanding of the game both offensively and defensively. She is also a consistent three-point shooter who set the South Dakota State Tournament record with 11 three-pointers as a junior 2004, which has since been broken. She also set the Brandon Valley school record with 121 three-pointers in her career.
High School
Hieb was a three-time All-East South Dakota Conference selection at Brandon Valley High School, earning first-team all-conference honors as a junior and senior after claiming honorable-mention accolades as a sophomore guard in 2003.
Hieb averaged 11 points and four assists per game as a senior, while setting the Brandon Valley record with 121 three-pointers in her career, including a single-season 51 three-pointers in a single-season for Coach Mark Stadem.
Hieb also set the South Dakota State Tournament record with 11 three-pointers in 2004, which was later broken by current Texas State starter Jenna Hoffman. Hieb's performance in the state tournament earned her a spot on the all-tournament team as a junior. She also helped Brandon Valley advance to the state tournament in 2002 and 2003.
A strong all-around athlete, Hieb earned three letters in track and field and one letter in cross country in addition to her four letters in basketball.
Hieb was also an outstanding performer in the classroom, posting a 3.97 cumulative grade-point average during her career to rank eighth among the 200 members of her high school graduating class. She was also a member of the National Honor Society.

The daughter of Mike and Val Hieb, Sara was born March 24, 1987 in Sioux Falls, S.D. She has one sister, Laura, 13. Sara is majoring in architecture at Nebraska and carries a 4.0 grade-point average. She attended Nebraska Women's Basketball Summer Camps during her high school career.
