Freshman (2010-11)
Kellie McCann-Smith provided a spark off the bench early in the season for the Huskers. The 5-9 guard from Asotin, Wash., averaged 3.0 points and 1.1 rebounds while playing in Nebraska's first 22 games of the season. She played her final game of the year at Colorado on Feb. 6, before being forced to the sideline with a back injury that began affecting her play early in the Big 12 Conference season.
McCann-Smith produced the best performance of her young career by pouring in 13 points on a career-high four three-pointers in NU's win over UNLV on Nov. 30. She added a rebound, an assist and a steal in just 16 minutes of action against the Rebels.
McCann-Smith knocked down 14-of-44 three-pointers on the year, while also dishing out 10 assists and snagging 11 steals in just 228 total minutes. She hit just 1-of-13 threes over her final seven games in Big 12 play, after opening the year 13-of-31 (41.9 percent) from long range through her first 15 contests.
She scored six points and grabbed a pair of steals in her Big 12 debut against Oklahoma on Jan. 8. The game against the Sooners was one of her two contests on the year that she hit more than one three-pointer.
Against Northern Colorado, McCann-Smith notched a career-high five steals - the most of any current Husker in a single game. She had four steals in 10 first-half minutes against the Bears. She also scored six points, had two rebounds and two assists against UNC.
McCann-Smith scored six points and played 14 minutes in NU's win over UNO on Nov. 26. She pulled down a career-high four rebounds in a win over Saint Mary's and dished out a career-best two assists in her collegiate debut against Vermont.
"Kellie is a scoring combo-guard who is extremely competitive," Yori said. "She can shoot the three or create shots off the dribble. She attended our camp last summer and really competed well. She is also a very good student."
High School
McCann-Smith averaged 20.9 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game for Coach Scott Thompson at Clarkston High School in Washington. McCann-Smith was a two-time first-team Class 2A all-state selection and earned all-state honors each of her four high school seasons.
She also competed for the Northwest Blazers - one of the dominant club teams in the nation - coached by Steve Klees out of Spokane, which is approximately two hours from Clarkston.
A talented all-around athlete, McCann-Smith was also a four-year volleyball letterwinner and earned two letters in tennis. Academically, she was a Washington State Scholar-Athlete and carried better than a 3.9 grade-point average.
Personal
The daughter of Dawn and Steve Smith, Kellie was born in Lewiston, Idaho. She is the youngest of seven sisters, Kassie (36), Sarah (34), Summer (32), Holly (30), Mandy (27) and Kayla (22). Kellie grew up on a farm in Asotin, Wash., where her family raises Longhorns and show pigs for fairs.
McCann-Smith continues Nebraska's recent recruiting success in the Northwest, joining 2009 Washington High School Player of the Year Lindsey Moore and Canadians Kaitlyn Burke and Harleen Sidhu from British Columbia.
McCann-Smith is a nutrition science major. She chose Nebraska over New Mexico, Washington and Long Beach State.Â
