Freshman (2002-03)
Kala Sledge earned playing time in 12 games as a freshman at Nebraska in 2002-03 after originally walking on to the Husker program. Sledge scored six points and grabbed five rebounds in her only season at NU. She also dished out two assists and snagged one steal. She made three appearances in Big 12 Conference action, including games at Colorado, against Baylor and at Texas.
She scored the first points of her career with a three-pointer in a win over Texas Southern on Dec. 9. She added two more points in a win over Cal State Fulleron on Dec. 11, and pitched in a single point against New Orleans on Dec. 22. She played a career-high 16 minutes in a season-opening win over Grambling when she set a career high with two rebounds.
Sledge transferred following her only season at Nebraska.
High School
Sledge played for Coach Scott Persigehl at Westside High School in Omaha, earning honorable-mention all-state accolades from both the Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal Star as a senior.
A standout softball player, Sledge was a starting infielder for the Warriors, who placed second in the Class A state tournament both her sophomore and junior seasons. She also played on the Echoes Gold select softball team during the summer.
Sledge earned four varsity letters in basketball and three in softball.
Personal
The daughter of Ted and Mary Sledge, Kala was born in Omaha, Neb., on Dec. 17, 1983. She has two brothers, Joe, 25, and Bret, 19. Kala has not declared a major. She is the niece of former Nebraska football standout Bob Sledge, and the cousin of former Husker gridiron standout Fred Pollack. Bob Sledge lettered for the Huskers in 1986-87-88, while earning All-Big Eight honors as an offensive tackle in 1988. Pollack was a four-year letterwinner for the Huskers from 1994 through 1997, playing on three national championship teams in 1994, 1995 and 1997.
