Jina Johansen closed a standout Nebraska career with her best season as a senior in 2004-05. The 5-7 guard from Dannebrog, Neb., earned honorable-mention All-Big 12 honors, while adding her third straight first-team academic All-Big 12 award.

Johansen played a school-record 1,156 minutes as a senior, as the only Husker to start all 32 games in 2004-05. She averaged 36.1 minutes played per game as a senior, including a school and Big 12 record 55 minutes in the Huskers’ 103-99 triple overtime win over eventual national champion Baylor on Jan. 12, 2005.

She added a complete-game 45 minutes in an overtime loss to Missouri on Feb. 26, and added 40-minute efforts 16 other times in her career, including six as a senior.

Johansen joined Meggan Yedsena as the only players in school history to play more than 1,000 minutes in a season twice in their careers. Johansen also played 1,028 minutes as a sophomore.

One of the top passing point guards in school history, Johansen also set a Nebraska senior season record with 191 assists, which ranked as the second-best overall single-season mark in school history. She also pushed her career total to 567 assists, which ranks No. 2 on NU’s all-time chart.

Johansen finished third in the Big 12 and 16th nationally with 6.0 assists per game, while also ranking third in the conference with a 2.55-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

With Johansen at the controls as a full-time starter from her sophomore through senior seasons, Nebraska produced three of the four lowest single-season turnover marks in school history.

Johansen enjoyed her best offensive season by averaging 6.3 points per game as a senior, while shooting a team-leading 38.3 percent (23-60) from three-point range. She hit a blistering 53.8 percent (14-26) from beyond the arc during Big 12 action.

A three-time winner of Nebraska’s Husker Award, presented to the player most committed to improving herself and her team, Johansen finished her career ranked No. 4 in school history in three-point field goal percentage (36.7). Her placement in NU’s top five came despite hitting just 9-of-36 three-pointers in her first two seasons combined at Nebraska.

Johansen enjoyed the best night of her career in NU’s 88-59 win over No. 14 Iowa State on Feb. 12, 2005. She scored a career-high 16 points, tied a career best with four three-pointers and matched her then-career high with nine assists against the Cyclones. NU’s victory margin against ISU was the Huskers’ largest-ever over a ranked opponent.

The next night out, Johansen set a career high with 11 assists in NU’s 73-59 win at Texas A&M Feb. 16. The assist total tied for the ninth-best mark in school history.

In Nebraska’s win at Missouri on Jan. 8, Johansen scored 14 points, dished out eight assists and did not commit a turnover while playing the full 40 minutes in one of the best games of her career.

In the Huskers’ Big 12-opening win over Colorado, Johansen scored 13 points, dished out seven assists and grabbed five rebounds to secure the first win of her career against the Buffaloes.

 

2003-04 (Junior)
Johansen added a stellar shooting stroke to her impressive passing skills to average 6.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and 5.0 assists in Big 12 Conference games as a junior. Her improved production allowed her to close the season averaging 5.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game while starting all 30 contests for the Huskers.

Johansen led the Huskers by hitting 41.1 percent of her shots from three-point range, which tied Amy Stephens (1987-88) for the top single-season three-point shooting season by a junior in school history. It also tied Stephens for second on NU's overall single-season chart.

Johansen's 30 three-pointers on the season tied Kiera Hardy for the team lead, while her 23 three-pointers in Big 12 games led the Huskers.

She shot the Huskers to victory over Iowa State on Jan. 10 by scoring a season-high 15 points, including a career-best four three-pointers. She added a season-high six rebounds. She hit three more three-pointers against the Cyclones in a loss at Ames on Feb. 21. She contributed a trio of three-pointers to finish with 11 points in a win over Kansas on Feb. 7.

While her scoring numbers improved, her passing numbers stayed steady. She dished out season highs with eight assists in wins over Texas-Arlington, Eastern Kentucky and Drake.

2002-03 (Sophomore)
One of the top passing point guards in the Big 12, Johansen tied for second in the league with 5.5 assists per game. She dished out seven or more assists 10 times in 2002-03, including a season-best nine assists to go along with nine points at Kansas on Jan. 29.

Johansen averaged 5.7 points and 3.1 rebounds per game, while ranking third on the club with 1.2 steals per contest.

Johansen’s 153 assists ranked as the second-best total by a sophomore in school history, trailing only Meggan Yedsena’s overall school record of 195 assists in 1991-92. Johansen’s total also ranked 10th on NU’s overall single-season assist list.

She averaged a school-record 36.7 minutes per game, surpassing Amy Stephens’ 35.6 minutes per game in 1988-89. Johansen played the full 40 minutes 10 times on the year. She played a season-low 27 minutes in the loss at No. 10 Texas on Feb. 22 – her only game with fewer than 30 minutes.

Her 1,028 minutes ranked as the seventh-highest total in school history and just the seventh time a player had spent more than 1,000 minutes on the court.

Johansen produced her third double-figure scoring effort of the year with 10 points, five rebounds and five assists against Kansas on Feb. 19. She had a career-high eight rebounds at Iowa State on March 1.

Johansen played the best all-around game of the season in a 71-56 win over Rice on Nov. 24. She scored a season-high 15 points and tied a season-best with nine assists. She provided her second double-figure scoring effort with 11 points and five assists in a 73-62 win over New Orleans on Dec. 22. She scored four points, while dishing out seven assists in NU’s win over San Diego on Dec. 28.

Johansen provided a strong showing in NU’s loss to No. 15 Penn State on Dec. 30, when she scored nine points, dished out eight assists and had five steals.

In the season-opening win over Grambling State, Johansen notched a career high with seven steals, while adding seven assists.

2001-02 (Freshman)
A true point guard with an uncanny ability to create shots for herself and teammates off the dribble, Johansen became a leader for the Huskers late in the season, guiding Nebraska to back-to-back wins in her first two career starts.

Johansen made the most of her first career start by dishing out a season-high nine assists, while scoring four points in Nebraska’s 67-52 upset of No. 11 Kansas State on Feb. 10.

Johansen also played a season-high 39 minutes against the Wildcats, the most minutes by any Husker in a game in 2001-02. Johansen’s nine assists tied Keasha Cannon-Johnson for the most assists by a Husker in a game in 2001-02.

She improved to 2-0 as NU’s starting point guard by guiding the Huskers to a 77-70 win over Kansas on Feb. 13, for Nebraska’s first road win during league play. Johansen distributed six assists, while scoring four points in 30 minutes of work before fouling out for the only time in her career.

Johansen finished the season averaging 1.7 points, 1.0 rebound and 2.6 assists per game. She played in all 30 contests, including six straight starts to end the regular season. She averaged 15.1 minutes per game on the year.

She established her season high with six points in a win over Northern Iowa on Nov. 24 in the San Juan Shootout. She matched her scoring high with six more points in a win over Texas Southern on Nov. 29, and at New Orleans on Dec. 2. She also scored six points in Nebraska’s loss at Texas Tech.

She played one of her best games with seven assists to go along with a season-best six rebounds in 28 minutes in a win over Chicago State on Dec. 22. Johansen’s performance came during Cannon-Johnson’s absence from the club because of the death of Cannon-Johnson’s mother on Dec. 19.

Johansen was one of NU’s most reliable ball-handlers, carrying a 1.7 assist-to-turnover ratio with 79 total assists and just 46 turnovers. A solid defender, Johansen contributed 13 steals (0.4 spg), including a season-high three steals in the season-opening win over Southern Illinois on Nov. 16.

High School
Johansen finished her career ranked sixth in state history with 2,064 points while dishing out 843 assists. She led Centura High School to the Class C-1 state title game as a senior under Coach Kathy Mettenbrink.

In her final season, Johansen was named the honorary captain of the Class C-1 all-state squad, while also capturing first-team All-Nebraska honors from the Omaha World-Herald by averaging 23.9 points, 8.5 assists, 6.5 steals and 5.0 rebounds per game. She also claimed first-team super-state honors from the Lincoln Journal Star in 2001.

As a junior, Johansen led Centura to the Class C-2 state title game by averaging 26.2 points, 8.8 assists and 5.6 steals per game to earn first-team Class C-2 all-state honors and second-team Super-State recognition from the Lincoln Journal Star. She also claimed first-team Class C-2 honors in 1999, after earning second-team all-state recognition as a freshman in 1998.

Johansen played on the Daubert-Pinnacle Bank All-Star team in the summers of 1999 and 2000.

Along with earning four letters in basketball, Johansen claimed four letters in cross country and two letters in track and field. She carried a 4.0 grade-point average and was a member of the National Honor Society. She was also an officer in several clubs.

Personal
The daughter of Russ and Marcia Johansen, Jina was born on Aug. 2, 1982, in Grand Island, Neb. One of five children, Jina has three older sisters, Jaci, 33, Jill, 31, and Jessica, 24, and one older brother, Jerrid, 25. Jina is scheduled to graduate in May after majoring in nutritional science and dietetics. She carried a 3.696 grade-point average.

Johansen chose Nebraska over Creighton, Kansas State, Colorado State and Iowa State.
