Team 1987-88 Nebraska Women's Basketball

Heather Smith provided major contributions to Nebraska's run to the Big Eight Conference title as a senior in 1987-88. The 6-1 forward from Hurlock, Md., averaged 7.4 points and 4.0 rebounds per game while appearing in 28 games with 10 starts. Smith helped the Huskers to a 22-7 overall record and an 11-3 Big Eight mark to win the school's only conference title. In Big Eight action, Smith appeared in 13 games with one start and averaged 3.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.

As a senior, Smith shot 53 percent from the field and 65.9 percent from the free throw line. She also had 17 assists, 29 steals and 11 blocked shots.

Smith joined the basketball team before the second semester of her junior season in 1986-87 and helped NU during Big Eight play. She appeared in 14 games, averging 1.0 point and 2.1 rebounds per game while playing just over seven minutes per contest. She had six points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots against Oklahoma.

During her first two years at Nebraska, Smith competed as a high jumper for the Husker indoor and outdoor track and field teams. She was the Big Eight indoor champion with a Big Eight Championship meet record leap of 6-1, on her way to All-America honors before suffering a pre-season knee injury.

Before her senior season of basketball, Smith set Nebraska records with a 27-inch vertical jump, a 10-yard dash time of 1.63 seconds and a 30-yard dash time of 3.84 seconds.

The daughter of Elizabeth Smith, Heather was born March 28, 1964 in Kingston, Jamaica. She was a business administration major at Nebraska.
