Redshirt (2023-24)
Allison Weidner (pronounced WIDE-ner) joined fellow junior Alexis Markowski and graduate student Maddie Krull as native Nebraskans on the Husker roster in 2023-24.
Weidner, a 5-10 guard from the small town of Humphrey (pop. 832) in Northeast Nebraska, was producing a breakout season as a sophomore before suffering a season-ending left leg injury in NU's final non-conference game against Kansas (Dec. 21).
Weidner's recovery and rehab after surgery went well, and she entered preseason practice projected to be a major contributor in an experienced Husker backcourt in 2023-24. However, Weidner suffered a season-ending right leg injury in practice on Oct. 13.
“We are heartbroken for Allison because we all saw how diligently she worked to get back out there doing what she loves with her teammates,” Nebraska Coach Amy Williams said. “She is a warrior, and we know how hard she will work to meet this new challenge and overcome this new injury as well.”
Weidner underwest surgery and hopes to return for her redshirt junior season at Nebraska in 2024-25.
“I was so excited as I reached the end of my long and hard recovery from my first knee injury,” Weidner said. “I was ready to be back on the court with my teammates, but I guess that was not part of God’s plan. This is, and I will begin my recovery and come back stronger than before. Until then, I can’t wait to support the Huskers from the sideline.”
Through 13 games as a starter in 2022-23, Weidner averaged 10.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists. In two Big Ten wins over Maryland and Wisconsin, she averaged 13.0 points, 10.0 boards and 6.0 assists.
In 10 career Big Ten starts as a freshman (8) and sophomore (2), Weidner has helped Nebraska to a 7-3 record including a pair of wins over top-20 teams (No. 10 Michigan, No. 20 Maryland) away from Pinnacle Bank Arena. In those 10 starts, Weidner has averaged 10.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists.
Sophomore (2022-23)
Weidner showed major improvements to her all-around game while taking on a greater leadership role in her second season. She averaged 10.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists while starting each of Nebraska's first 13 games of 2022-23. She scored in double figures in four consecutive games before suffering a season-ending leg injury early in the fourth quarter of NU's triple-overtime win over No. 20 Kansas (Dec. 21). She underwent successful surgery on Jan. 10, 2023.
Weidner had 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists in a win over Wyoming (Dec. 18). It followed her second double-double of the season with 15 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high five steals in a win over Samford (Dec. 10).
She notched her first career double-double with 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds in Nebraska's upset of No. 20 Maryland in College Park (Dec. 4). Weidner, who added five assists against the Terps, scored all 13 of her points and grabbed eight of her rebounds in the second half alone, as NU outscored Maryland 59-31 in the second half. Weidner's effort helped the Huskers secure their first-ever win over Maryland, which went on to advance to the NCAA Elite Eight.
Weidner added 13 points, five rebounds and seven assists in an 82-54 win over Wisconsin (Dec. 7) to help the Huskers improve to 2-0 in Big Ten play despite the absence of starters Isabelle Bourne, Trinity Brady and Sam Haiby - who all missed the game with injuries.
Weidner opened the season with 19 points and a then-career-high nine rebounds in a win over Omaha (Nov. 7). She made a career-high nine field goals in just 11 attempts against the Mavs. She added her second career 20-point performance with 20 points and seven boards in a win over Houston Christian (Nov. 11).
She was injured on an offensive rebound on the first possession of the game against Tarleton (Nov. 22), but still finished the play with a bucket in the opening minute before she left the court. Weidner, who played 59 seconds, did not return to the game after suffering an eye injury. She did return to the starting lineup three days later in NU's win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Puerto Rico Clasico (Nov. 25). She had 13 points and five rebounds against the Islanders.
Freshman (2021-22)
Weidner joined Alexis Markowski as freshman starters in Nebraska's lineup down the stretch in 2021-22. Weidner averaged 7.2 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists while playing in all 33 games for the 24-9 Huskers in 2021-22.
She moved into Nebraska's starting five for the final eight games of the season and started nine contests overall for the Huskers, who finished No. 23 in the NET rankings and advanced to the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
She produced the most memorable performance of her young career with a team-high 16 points, including two free throws with 5.5 seconds left to seal Nebraska's 76-73 victory over No. 10 Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals in Indianapolis (March 4). Weidner added three rebounds, two assists and two steals against the Wolverines to give Nebraska two wins over the eventual 2022 NCAA Elite Eight qualifiers.
Weidner put together her best game with a career-high 23 points and a career-best three threes in a 93-70 win over Minnesota (Feb. 20). She hit 8-of-10 shots from the field, including all three of her long-range attempts, while also going 4-for-4 from the free throw line against the Gophers. She added five rebounds.
She scored in double figures seven times on the season, including 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists in just 18 minutes off the bench in a win over Prairie View A&M (Nov. 11). She added 10 points, five boards and three assists in a victory over Drake (Dec. 19), before producing her first double-digit effort in Big Ten play with 14 points and five rebounds off the bench in a win over Purdue (Jan. 30). She scored all 14 points in the first half against the Boilermakers.
Weidner matched that performance with 14 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in a win over Penn State (Feb. 3). She scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to help the Huskers turn a one-point lead into a 15-point win. Weidner also had 11 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal in Nebraska's 72-55 run past No. 5 Indiana (Feb. 14). She hit 5-of-7 shots from the field, including her lone three-point attempt, to help the Huskers to their largest victory margin ever against a top-five team. The win over Indiana marked Weidner's last game off the bench in 2021-22.
In nine starts on the season, Weidner averaged 9.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists. She made her first career start in place of an injured Sam Haiby at Iowa (Jan. 16), in a game the Huskers also played without starting guard Jaz Shelley (COVID protocols). Weidner finished with eight points, three rebounds, five assists and a block against the Hawkeyes.
Weidner made a solid debut with nine points in a win over Maine (Nov. 9) and threatened a triple-double with eight points, eight rebounds and eight assists in just 18 minutes off the bench in a win over North Carolina Central (Nov. 20). Her eight rebounds and eight assists were both season highs.
High School
One of the top small-school players in Nebraska history, Weidner finished her four-year high school career with 2,282 points, 741 assists and 629 steals. Her career point total ranked No. 3 across all classes in Nebraska girls basketball history, while she became just the 13th player in state history to score 2,000 career points. The star from Humphrey St. Francis High School was a four-time first-team Class D2 All-State selection for Coach Bryan Reichmuth. A first-team all-class, all-state pick by both the Omaha World-Herald and the Lincoln Journal Star as both a junior and senior, Weidner led the state in scoring with 25.0 points per game as a senior, while also leading the state with 6.4 assists per game. Her 6.4 steals per game also ranked second in the state across all classes, while she added 7.0 rebounds per contest. Weidner scored 71 points over three state tournament wins to lead Humphrey St. Francis to the state title.
Weidner averaged 25.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 6.5 assists and a whopping 7.3 steals per game as a junior in 2020. She also led the Flyers to a state runner-up finish while earning a spot on the Class D2 All-Tournament team. She scored a state tournament-best 83 points over three games as a junior. She led St. Francis to a Class D2 state runner-up finish as a freshman and claimed her first selection to the all-tournament team. Weidner also guided the Flyers to a state tournament bid as a sophomore in 2019.
As a junior in 2020, Weidner nearly notched a quadruple-double with 28 points, 10 assists, 10 steals and 9 rebounds against Elkhorn Valley. She also produced a triple-double with 29 points, 12 rebounds and 10 steals against Fullerton. In the 2020 state tournament, she erupted for a career-high 39 points against Mullen. She had 38 points against Howells/Dodge.
She also led the state in assists in both 2018 and 2019, while leading the state in steals in 2019.
Weidner played club basketball for the Nebraska Attack and Coach Zach Isherwood. She led the Attack to the championship of the Nike Tournament of Champions Session 2, Gold Division. The Nebraska Attack also finished fifth at Under Armour Nationals and won the Midwest Basketball Showcase.
Chosen as one of the top multi-sport athletes in the state by the Lincoln Journal Star in 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21, Weidner was also a first-team all-stater in volleyball while leading St. Francis to a state runner-up finish as a junior in 2019. She was also an honorable-mention Class D2 all-state choice and led the Flyers to a third-place finish as a sophomore in 2018. She guided Humphrey St. Francis back to the state tournament as a senior in 2020.
On the track, Weidner swept the Class D2 state titles in the 400 and 800-meter runs in 2018, 2019 and 2021. She added two more state titles as a member of the 3,200-meter relay team as a sophomore and senior, after helping the 1,600-meter relay to a state runner-up finish as a freshman. Weidner also finished sixth in the triple jump as a senior. No state track and field championships were held in 2020 because of COVID-19.
She earned 11 letters across basketball, volleyball and track at St. Francis, capturing a total of 10 individual or team state championships.
Weidner was also a leader in the classroom at Humphrey St. Francis. She earned Academic All-State honors in basketball as a senior (winter 2021) and volleyball as a junior (fall 2019). She was a two-year member of the National Honor Society, serving as the group’s treasurer as a senior. She was also a member in the Big Sisters Program at Humphrey St. Francis.
Personal
The daughter of Dan and Cathy Weidner, Allison was born April 29, 2003, in Norfolk, Neb. She has two older brothers, Brandon and Nathan. A child, youth and family studies major, Allison earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition in 2023 and 2024. She is a four-time Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll selection and a two-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.
Weidner chose Nebraska over Creighton, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Duquesne, Omaha, Denver, Toledo, North Dakota State and Wyoming.
"I chose Nebraska because of the family atmosphere that the coaches and staff provide," Weidner said. “The support that Nebraska provides to its student-athletes is something that stood out to me. As a child I always dreamed of playing for Nebraska and representing my home state. It is truly an honor to be a Husker. Go Big Red!”
