Karlis redshirted the 2013 season... competed unattached at the Nebraska Quad on April 13, where he notched a throw of 144-2 (43.95) in the discus and 152-4 (46.44) in the javelin.

Before Nebraska (Lake Park)
Karlis joined the Huskers from Lake Park High School in Medinah, Ill... set a personal-best mark of 170-2 (51.86) in the discus.. finished 13th in the discus at the Illinois High School Class 3A State Preliminary Championships with a mark of 155-6.
