2006: Bates competed for the Huskers indoors in the triple jump during his first season at Nebraska before taking a redshirt outdoors... appeared in three indoor meets, with a top performance of 45-7 1/4 to earn third place at the Prairie Wolf Invitational... also finished third at the Nebraska Wesleyan Triangular (45-6 1/4), while earning 15th at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invite (45-1 1/2)... competed unattached once outdoors at the Nebraska Invite. High School: Bates was a four-year Nebraska Class C state meet qualifier in both the long jump and triple jump for Neligh-Oakdale High School... won back-to-back triple jump titles as a senior and junior... set the Class C all-time and state meet records with a leap of 46-7 as a junior in 2004 while winning the event with a wind-aided leap of 47-0... recorded a mark of 45-2 3/4 to win gold as a senior in 2005, while also finishing runner-up in the long jump competition (21-5 3/4)... also qualified for the state meet in the 100-meter dash, but did not place... finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the triple jump as a sophomore (43-5 3/4) and freshman (43-11 1/4)... earned fifth place in the long jump as a junior (21-1)... was a member of the National Honor Society.
