2021 (COVID-19 Year)
Before suffering a season-ending injury, Jake Bonnay competed in five meets, earning three individual titles on floor.
Outside of the gym, Bonnay was an Academic All-Big Ten honoree and an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar. He was also a member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters.
2021 (Fourth Year)
Bonnay returned for his fourth year after receiving a medical hardship during the 2020 season. Bonnay competed in all eight meets winning the floor event title against Penn State. The College Gymnastics Association named Bonnay a regular-season floor All-American for the second season in a row.
Outside of the gym, Bonnay was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and an Academic All-Big Ten choice.
2020 (Medical Hardship)
Before suffering a season-ending injury, Bonnay earned three individual titles and set one individual career-high score. Bonnay earned All-America regular-season honors on floor despite the season ending early due to the coronavirus pandemic. A Nissen-Emery Award finalist and 2020 team captain, Bonnay earned NCAA Specialist-of-the-Week honors after his performance against Minnesota and Army West Point, where he posted a 14.55 on floor, 13.95 on vault, 14.25 on parallel bars and 13.50 on high bar.
Outside of the gym, Bonnay also was a leader for the Huskers. In the classroom, Bonnay earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll. Additionally, he was named a Nebraska Bronze Academic Medallion Winner, while also earning a spot on the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for his service in the community.
Bonnay will return for a fifth year in 2021 after being granted a medical hardship.
2019 (Third Year)
Bonnay set three career highs during his junior season and helped the Huskers to a third-place finish at NCAA Championships, their best finish since 1999. Bonnay received All-America honors at the NCAA Championships, notching a 14.40 on floor.
During the summer, Bonnay competed at the FISU Summer University Games in Naples, Italy. Bonnay earned an eighth-place finish on pommel horse scoring a 12.90.
Bonnay also excelled in the classroom, earning Academic All-Big Ten honors.
2018 (Second Year)
Bonnay was one of Nebraska’s top competitors on floor and posted a season-best score of 14.50. Bonnay claimed the silver medal (14.90) on vault at the 2018 Big Ten Championships and shared the silver medal on floor with fellow Husker Anton Stephenson, scoring a 14.20. Bonnay helped the team to the NCAA Championship Team Finals, where the Huskers finished fifth - their best finish since 1999.
During the summer, Bonnay competed at the Canadian National Championships, finishing 22nd overall on day one with a score of 66.850. He finished in the top 10 on all of his events. Bonnay finished fourth on floor with a score of 13.550 and tied for fifth on high bar with a score of 13.700, advancing to the finals on both events. Bonnay was one of 12 gymnasts selected to compete at the World Championship Trials for Canada. Bonnay earned his spot at the trials after an impressive performance at the Canadian Nationals.
Bonnay excelled in the classroom as well, claiming a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the spring of 2018.
2017 (First Year)
Bonnay made an immediate impact in his first season at Nebraska, competing in all but two meets for the Huskers in 2017. Bonnay was a regular high bar competitor and occasionally appeared on floor. He scored season-best scores on floor (14.45) and high bar (13.80). Bonnay competed at the Big Ten Championships and at the NCAA Championships, helping the team to a top-six finish for the first time since 1999. Additionally, Bonnay earned Newcomer of the Year from his team and coaches for his hard work during his debut season.
Bonnay made a difference in the community as well, earning a spot on the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2017, while also claiming a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the spring of 2017.
Before Nebraska
Bonnay competed for Gymnastics Mississauga under Head Coach Chris Foo. The Burlington, Ontario, native was named Canada’s National Athlete of the Year in 2014 and 2015. Bonnay has been a member of the Canadian Junior National Team since 2014. In 2015, he took first on pommel horse, high bar and parallel bars at the 2015 Junior National Championship.
At the 2014 BlackJack Invitational, Bonnay placed fifth on parallel bars and 13th in the all-around. In 2013, Bonnay competed at the Windy City Invitational where he placed fifth on floor, fourth on vault and 12th in the all-around. Bonnay was also a member of Team Ontario in 2013.
Personal
Jake (Jacob) is one of five international gymnasts on the Nebraska men’s gymnastics team. He became the first Canadian to join the Huskers since Martin Fournier (St. Hubert, Quebec) who was a Husker from 1999 to 2002 and the first gymnast from Ontario since NCAA champion Jason Hardabura. Jake is the son of Joanne Platt and Steve Bonnay. Jake was born on Jan. 8, 1998, and has one brother, Nicholas. A business administration major, Jake earned his bachelor's degree from Nebraska in May of 2021. A 2021 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, he was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and an eight-time member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll. He chose Nebraska over Minnesota, Penn State and Illinois. Bonnay attended Assumption Catholic Secondary School, where he was a member of the Honor Roll. Outside of gymnastics, Jake enjoys making videos and listening to music.
