Ailis Tribolet and Kaleigh Babineaux put together top-five individual performances to power the Nebraska women's golf team to a runner-up finish at the 19-team Golf Iconic Classic in Las Cruces, N.M., Wednesday.
Tribolet, a sophomore from Chandler, Ariz., claimed a second-place individual finish with a three-round total of 210 (-6) to trail medalist Kylie Warner from San Diego State by a single stroke (209, -7).
Babineaux, a Husker sophomore from Austin, Texas, added a fourth-place finish with a 213 (-3) that included a career-best 65 (-7) on the par-72, 6,420-yard layout of the New Mexico State University Golf Course in the final round. Babineaux stormed 32 spots up the leader board on Wednesday, including a sizzling 31 on the back nine that featured an eagle on the 496-yard, par-5 12th hole.
Junior Jessica Jolly, senior Hannah Kono and sophomore Ammy Raemmuang all added top-20 individual finishes for the Huskers in the 104-player field in New Mexico. Jolly tied for 16th at 218 (+2), including an opening-round 69 (-3), while Kono and Raemmuang tied for 18th at 219 (+3). Kono opened with a 71 (-1), while Raemmuang contributed a 71 (-1) of her own in the second round.
As a team, Nebraska matched their season-best total at 852 (-12) over three rounds to finish just one stroke back of the team champions from San Diego State. The Huskers gained seven strokes on the Aztecs Wednesday with a final-round 281 (-7) compared to SDSU's even-par 288. However, the Aztecs surged to the team lead Tuesday with a 277 (-11) that the Big Red was unable to overcome. Nebraska led the tournament after the opening round with another 281 (-7) Monday, before adding a 290 (+2) Tuesday.
The Huskers closed the fall with a 285.25 team stroke average over four tournaments, putting them nearly seven strokes ahead of school-record pace (292.21, 2022-23). Nebraska ended the fall with a 36-13-1 head-to-head mark while posting winning records in each of its four fall events.
Babineaux (71.00), Kono (71.50) and Tribolet (71.58) closed the fall with subpar stroke averages, while Jolly put up an impressive 72.08 average over 12 rounds. The only player in school history to produce a subpar average for a full competitive season was Kelli Ann Strand with a 71.53 average over 32 rounds in 2023-24.
The Huskers will work for continued improvement over the next three-and-a-half months before returning to competition at the CIEE Paradise Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla. (Feb. 1-3).
