Huskers Defeat #46 Penn State

The No. 50 Nebraska women’s tennis team topped No. 46 Penn State, 4-2, on Sunday. The Huskers (13-6, 6-4 Big Ten) are back in the win column after falling to No. 3 Ohio State on Friday. 

NU picked up two doubles wins along with three singles wins, and dropped two singles matches against the Nittany Lions (12-8, 3-6 Big Ten). 

Sunday’s match began at the Dillon Tennis Center with doubles play. 65th-ranked doubles teammates Conley Raidt and Katie Spencer paired up on court one, along with Reya Lee Coe and Natalia Trigosso who partnered on court three, and Emma Rizzetto and Tiziana Rossini on court five for the Big Red. 

After a back-and-forth battle, Rizzetto and Rossini were the first to finish, topping Cegarra/Ciubotaru by a score of 6-4. Quickly after, Coe and Trigosso completed their match, defeating Uchijima/Grigoras, 6-4, to clinch the doubles point for NU. Raidt/Spencer were left unfinished at a score of 5-5.

Heading into singles action, Nebraska had a 1-0 lead. Rizzetto extended the margin after defeating Uchijima on court four by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Shortly after, Maria Taranova fell to Monfils on court one, 6-2, 6-3. Penn State continued to push back, as Grigoras defeated Raidt, 6-1, 7-5, on court two to tie the match at 2-2. 

Catherine Gagnon took back the lead for the Big Red, topping Ciubotaru on court five, 6-4, 6-3. After falling down a set, Spencer battled back and won two straight to grab a victory on court three by a score of 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, clinching the 4-2 victory for the Huskers.

Nebraska will continue its four-match homestand against Creighton on Wednesday, April 8. The match against the Bluejays is set to begin at 5 p.m. (CT) at the Dillon Tennis Center.
