Huskers Fall in Close Match vs. #36 Wisconsin

The Nebraska men’s tennis team fell in a close match to No. 36 Wisconsin, 4-2 in a Saturday match at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln. The 49th-ranked Huskers took the doubles point against the Badgers but were kept to one singles win in the loss. 

In doubles, the Huskers started off with an electric start taking leads at No. 1 and No. 3 but falling behind on court 2. At No. 3, the pair of Leo Linquet/Joan Torres Espinosa (NEB) took an instant lead going up 4-1 in their match. They were the first ones off the doubles courts taking their match vs. Matthew Fulleton/Patrik Meszaros (WIS), 6-2. At No. 1, Henry Bilicic/Nikolay Sysoev battled out their match before getting out to a 4-3 lead and taking the match 6-3 vs. Oliver Olsson/Tomas Zlatohlavek (WIS). The win clinched the doubles point for Nebraska as it lead the match, 1-0. 

The match between Henry Lamchinniah/Matt Shearer (NEB) and Michael Minasyan/Ferdinand Kloesters (WIS) was unfinished at 2-5.

In singles play, the Badgers came out to a hot start taking five out of the six first sets, setting the Huskers back in the match. After a battle between all courts, No. 107 Sysoev was the first off the singles courts, dropping his match in two to Meszaros, 3-6, 2-6. Quickly after, Colson Wells fell to Kloesters in straight sets, 2-6, 2-6 as Wisconsin found itself with a 2-1 lead. 

Freshman Niels Van Der Sijs came right back in his match to win in two sets vs. Zlatohlavek, 6-4, 6-2 to tie the match right back up for the Huskers. But once again the Badgers answered with a win of their own as Espinosa fell to Eduoward Aubert on court four, 2-6, 3-6. 

With the Huskers down in a close match, freshman Jeri Lassila battled on court two and Lamchinniah battled on court six. Lassila fought but ultimately fell at No. 2 vs. No. 84 Minasyan, 5-7, 4-6 which clinched the match for Wisconsin as Nebraska fell 4-2 to the No. 39 ranked Badgers, 2-4. 

The match vs. Lamchinniah and Sachiv Kumar was left unfinished at 4-6, 6-1, 2-2.

Nebraska will take its last road trip of the regular season and head to Indiana to take on Purdue in West Lafayette on Friday, April 10 at 5 p.m (CT) at the Schwartz Tennis Center. The Huskers will then head to Bloomington to take on Indiana on Sunday, April 12 at 12 p.m. (CT).
