Huskers Drop Match at Minnesota to Close Out Regular Season

The No. 42 Nebraska women’s tennis team fell to Minnesota on Sunday, April 19, by a score of 4-2. The Huskers now turn their attention to the Big Ten Tournament, where they earned the No. 9 seed and will take on No. 8 seed Illinois on Thursday.

The Big Red dropped two doubles matches and three singles matches, along with one doubles and two singles victories. 

Sunday’s match began with doubles play at the Baseline Tennis Center. No. 39 Conley Raidt and Katie Spencer headlined the doubles lineups, as they grabbed NU’s lone doubles victory over Pinto/Ante by a score of 6-3 on court one. Liepert/Knezevic then grabbed a 6-4 victory over Emma Rizzetto and Yuzu Miyoshi on court three, leaving the clinch up to court two. Minnesota’s Valitova/Xie would grab the doubles clinch with a close 7-6 [7-4] victory over Reya Lee Coe and Natalia Trigosso on court two.

Down 1-0 after concluding doubles play, NU took the courts for singles. Catherine Gagnon was the first Husker to fall, as she was defeated by Pinto on court four by a score of 6-1, 6-4. Minnesota then grabbed another victory on court six, as Valitova took down Miyoshi, 6-4, 6-4. 

Down 3-0, the Big Red attempted a comeback, as Conley Raidt topped Liepert on court two by a score of 7-5, 6-3. Spencer then tallied a victory for the Huskers, defeating Ante on court one, 6-2, 6-4. However, it was not enough, as Rizzetto fell to Aiva Schmitz on court three by a score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, giving the Golden Gophers the 4-2 victory.
