Big Red Upset #21 Washington, Hand Huskies First Loss of Season

The Nebraska women’s tennis team narrowly defeated No. 21 Washington, 4-3 on Friday in Lincoln, Neb. The Huskers (9-5, 2-3 Big Ten) earn their first ranked win of the season.

NU dropped one doubles match and three singles matches against Washington (12-1, 3-1 Big Ten), while picking up two doubles and three singles matches. 

The Big Red began with doubles play at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center with Conley Raidt and Katie Spencer teaming up on court one, Emma Rizzetto and Catherine Gagnon on court three and Reya Lee Coe and Natalia Trigosso on court five. Jacobs/Weissheim defeated Spencer/Raidt by a score of 6-1. Raidt and Spencer pushed back, topping #36 Matsuda/Syrtveit, 6-3, for the Huskers’ first ranked doubles victory of the season. Coe and Trigosso defeated Carter/Sherif, 6-4, to secure the doubles point for NU, its first time doing so in Big Ten play. Nebraska also served the Huskies their first doubles point loss of the season. 

The Huskers took the singles courts up 1-0 after doubles play. Raidt was the first Husker to finish, as she fell to Carter, 6-1, 6-2 on court two. Rossini followed with a loss as well, defeated on court five by nationally-ranked No. 103 Marie Weissheim. Sherif then grabbed a third singles point for Washington after beating Emma Rizzetto on court four by a score of 2-6, 6-1, 6-1. 

After falling behind 3-1, it was all Nebraska to the end. Maria Taranova notched the first singles win of the night for the Big Red, topping No. 70 Matsuda 6-4, 7-5 on court one. Yuzu Miyoshi then tied the match up at 3-3 with her straight-set victory over Syrtveit, winning 7-6 [7-5], 7-5. Spencer then took the charge, defeating Jacobs on court three, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the team victory for NU, handing Washington its first loss of the season.

The Huskers will stay at home for a match on Sunday, March 22 against No. 64 Oregon. The match against the Ducks is set to begin at 12 p.m. (CT) at the Dillon Tennis Center.
