The No. 51 Nebraska men's tennis team took down No. 44 Northwestern, 4-2, for its first Big Ten win on Sunday, March 15 at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. The Huskers (9-6) grabbed four singles wins to take down the Wildcats (13-6).
In doubles, a battle of two ranked Big Ten teams showed throughout as Nebraska battled against a top 30 opponent at No. 1 doubles and back-and-forth duals at No. 2 and 3.
At No. 1 doubles, Henry Lamchinniah/Matt Shearer (NEB) stuck with the No. 26 ranked opponent Greyson Casey/Carter Pate (NU) but ultimately fell, 4-6 to give Northwestern the edge on the doubles point. Jeri Lassila/Joan Torres Espinosa (NEB) fell short to Cooper Han/Owen Megargee (NU), 3-6. Immediately after the last point of that match, Nikolay Sysoev/Henry Bilicic lost the match point vs. Cyrus Mahjoob/Ethan Schiffman (NU) to fall, 4-6.
Northwestern swept doubles play as Nebraska trailed 0-1 going into singles.
In singles play, Nebraska started off taking four of the six first sets. At No. 1, Sysoev lost his match in straight sets to Pate, 4-6, 2-6 to give Northwestern a 2-0 lead in the match. Playing at No. 2 in this match, Leo Linquet secured a straight set win over Mahjoob, 6-2, 6-2 to get the Huskers' first point of the match. Following him was Lassila who obtained his 12th singles win of the season over Casey, 7-5, 6-0. At No. 5, Lamchinniah grabbed another singles win for the Huskers vs. Chad Miller, 6-3, 7-5.
The match outcome relied on courts four and six where Espinosa and Niels Van Der Sijs fought for who would take the fourth singles win for Nebraska. The senior was the one to clinch the match and win it for the Huskers as Espinosa took his match in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. His win grabbed the Huskers' first Big Ten win of the season.
Van Der Sijs match vs. Schiffman was left unfinished in its third set, 7-6, 4-6, 3-1.
