The Nebraska men’s tennis team fell to Ole Miss, 4-2 on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln. This was Nebraska’s first loss of the season, while Ole Miss (8-0) remained undefeated. NU (6-1) fell one win short of tying the best start in program history.

In doubles play, Nebraska started off slow with Nikolay Sysoev/Leo Linquet (NEB) dropping their match vs. Isac Strömberg/Kai Milburn (MISS), 2-6. The Huskers answered right back with Colson Wells/Jeri Lassila (NEB) winning their match against Stefano D’Agostina/Pietro Pampanin (MISS), 6-1.

With doubles all tied up, Henry Lamchinniah/Joan Torres Espinosa (NEB) continued to fight on court three vs. Matthieu Chambonniere/Benjamin Martin (MISS) and prevailed in their match in a tie breaker, 7-6 [7-4] to secure the doubles point for Nebraska and take the lead 1-0 going into singles play.

In singles play, Nebraska found themselves down quickly with Linquet losing his match on court two to Chambonniere, 1-6, 2-6. This tied the match up, 1-1 with the rest of the five singles matches eventually going to a third set.

Concluding almost an hour after the finish of Linquet’s match, Sysoev earned another singles win beating D’Agostina in a three set match, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. After the Huskers took the 2-1 lead, Ole Miss came back firing on all courts winning the next three singles matches in a row. Niels van der Sijs was the first to drop his match 6-4, 4-6, 3-6 to Strömberg.

As Nebraska fought on court four and six, Ole Miss was able to get the edge taking both courts almost exactly right after each other. Lamchinniah lost his match vs. Martin, 6-3, 2-6, 3-6 and Lassila suffered his first loss of the season falling to Vlado Jankanj, 5-7, 6-4, 2-6 to secure the match for the Rebels as Nebraska suffered their first loss of the season.

The match between Wells and Pampanin was declared unfinished on court three.
