In its first road match of the spring season, the Nebraska women’s tennis team fell to the Kansas Jayhawks, 4-1 on Friday. NU takes its first loss of the season and falls to 3-1.
The Huskers grabbed one singles match and dropped three singles matches and two doubles matches.
The dual began with doubles. Juniors Emma Rizzetto and Tiziana Rossini took on Kubo/Janse Van Vuuren on court one, Reya Lee Coe and Yuzu Miyoshi faced Arystanbekova/Putilina on court two and Maria Taranova and Natalia Trigosso matched up against McCarty/VanPelt. The first matchup to finish was Rizzetto and Rossini who fell to Kubo/Jans Van Vuuren, 6-1. The Jayhawks’ Arystanbekova/Putilina then topped Taranova/Trigosso, 6-2, to secure the doubles point for the Jayhawks.
Down by one, the Big Red moved into singles play. Catherine Gagnon took the first and only singles point for NU to tie the dual at 1-1, defeating Nahyeong Cho, 6-3, 6-4, on court five. On court six, Putilina defeated Coe, 6-4, 6-3 to take the lead, and nationally ranked No. 21 Kyoka Kubo defeated Taranova, 6-4, 7-6 [7-5] to extend the lead for the Jayhawks. Arystanbekova then topped Katie Spencer, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, on court three to grab the dual win for Kansas.

The Huskers will return home for a doubleheader at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center on Sunday, Feb. 1. Nebraska will face North Dakota at 1 p.m. (CT), and then take on Kansas City at 5 p.m. (CT). Parking and attendance are free for fans, and the matches will be streamed live on Playsight.
