Lincoln - Caden Mickelson fired an eight-under par 134 through 36 holes to lead the Nebraska men's golf team to the top of the team standings after the first day of the Git-R-Done Invitational at Firethorn Golf Club on Monday.
Mickelson (pronounced MIKE-ull-son), a true freshman from Kansas City, fired an opening-round 66 (-5) before adding a second-round 68 (-3) on the 7,077-yard, par-71 layout at Firethorn. He ended the day in second individually, two shots back of tournament leader Alex Lindstrom from Kansas State. Lindstrom unleashed an opening-round 63 (-8), before adding a 69 (-2) to sit two shots ahead of Mickelson on the leader board.
Junior Rudy Sautron matched Mickelson stroke-for-stroke in the opening round with a 66 (-5) before ending the day with a 70 (-1) to sit alone in third individually at 136 (-6).
The Huskers also received a strong opening-day performance from Brodie Cunningham. The sophomore from Glasgow, Scotland, carded rounds of even-par 71 and 67 (-4) to close the day in a tie for fourth at 138 (-4).
As a team, the Huskers posted a 549 (-19) over two rounds, including an opening-round 272 (-12), before a second-round 277 (-7). The Big Red own a 12-stroke lead over Kansas State, which finished the day at 561 (-7) with rounds of 275 and 286. Iowa State enters Tuesday's final round at third in the team standings at 562 (-6), while Wichita State sits in fourth at 565 (-3).
In addition to the three Huskers in the top five of the individual standings, Lincoln freshman Thomas Bryson enters Tuesday's final round in the top 10, after firing a second-round 67 (-4). He closed the day at 139 (-3) in a tie for seventh place while playing outside Nebraska's lineup.
Redshirt junior Evan McDermott also worked his way into the top 15 in the individual standings, with rounds of 69 (-2) and 72 (+1) to end the day at 141 (-1) in a tie for 14th.
The Git-R-Done Invitational will conclude with Tuesday's final round beginning at 8 a.m. (CT).
