Huskers Up Early, But Fall to Iowa 4-2

Lincoln, Neb. - NU grabbed the doubles point to begin the day, but it was not enough as the No. 75 Nebraska women’s tennis team fell to Iowa 4-2 on Sunday afternoon. 

Action started with doubles play, as Maja Pietrowicz and Raphaelle Lacasse held Hawkeyes’ Melva and Matthews to just one game and grabbed the 6-1 victory on Court One. On Court Two, No. 47 Ana Zamburek and Anfisa Danilchenko followed suit with a 6-2 victory over Barbara Pokorna and Pia Kranholdt. On Court Three, Isabel Adrover Gallego and Lucy Loy were down 3-4 when their match was abandoned as the Huskers went up 1-0 and moved on to singles play. 

To open singles, Iowa gained momentum with victories on Court Five against Zamburek, 6-1, 6-3; Court Two against Danilchenko 6-2, 6-1, and Court Three over Adrover Gallego 7-5, 6-1. With the Huskers down 3-1, Lacasse, Pietrowicz and Maria Taranova battled on their respective courts. After dropping the first set 6-3, Taranova came back and won the second set 6-3 and swept the third set 6-0 for the second point for the Huskers. On Court Four, Pietrowicz took the first set 7-6 (4), dropped the second 6-7 (4) and battled but lost the third set 6-4, and Iowa won the match 4-2. On Court One, Lacasse lost the first set 6-7, rallied 7-5 in set two and was up 4-3 in the final set when the match was called. 

Up next, the Huskers will host Baylor on Wednesday, March 27 at 1 p.m. (CT). The match will be streamed on Playsight, and live stats will be posted on huskers.com.
